Personally I think it's the economic forces of the world that's forging exclusivity for intimate relationships. Like, marriage was something done during ancient times to cross-consolidate regional powers and more often than not, for monetary reasons. Emotions are so fleeting - an ex used to tell me "if it doesn't work out, just remember we had our good times.".

Although on a personal note, I kinda find cheating inexcusable if one enters an exclusive relationship with another - and in this case, love without sacrifice is like theft.
