Steemit Recordpool: Review of PsycheMagik's Groovy and Hallucinogenic "The Trip E.P."

in #recordpool7 years ago (edited)

A few months ago "The Trip" came on my radio and I almost got in a car accident reaching for my phone to Shazam it. What was this groovy lick populating my ear drums?? I got addicted immediately and when I got near a computer I scoured the internet for a link, but all could find was a bandcamp preview. Alas, the song wasn't out yet - but now it is!

Psychemagik are a cheery, unique duo from the UK who make some weird excellent party tracks. They're kinda known as one of the big psychedelic DJs in the scene. A few years ago they released a flambuoyant dancefloor banger called Mink & Shoes that got them some traction. They're known for their remix and edit game as well, making their mark on classics by The Talking Heads and Fleetwood Mac. They really aren't afraid to tread across any genre and that's what I really appreciate about them and artists in general. That diversity.

"The Trip" sets the scene with a kind of spacey, white noise, classic rock sound to it for the first minute. At the start they implement a slightly marching drum pattern and give the listener peaks of the upcoming tasty lick with a little dash of faded psychedelia. At about a minute and a half you get an echoing "Hiiii---------Hiiiii-------------Hiiiii"and then we're off on our Trip! While we're grooving we get disorienting vocal samples that craft a sonic atmosphere of being on acid. Psychemagik killed it with this song and I'm going to be listening to it and showing people for months to come.

The second track of our EP is the relaxed funk of "Sister of The Moon". You've got some excellent sliding guitar work from the band coupled with a stomping drum pattern. The kinda whiskey drinking romp you'd like to hear at a small rock club. The vocal and some horns come in and it transitions to an airy ride through the sky or space. The kind of tune you'd like to put on while you did some activity around the house, or chilling on a front porch with a good friend.

It's a solid two-track EP, with "The Trip" being the standout gem in my opinion. I think it could even have meme potential in the psychedelic way you see that song by Macintosh Plus converted into memes. I posted that song below the bandcamp link to The Trip because it's so good on its own if you haven't heard. Before you do that check out The Trip E.P.

Hell yeah! Nice review sir. I'm grooving to The Trip right now. It has a very nostalgic psych sound but it's also veryyy funky and dancy. I'm on board.

Also I LOVE that Macintosh Plus track. Seriously I regularly revisit that tune. It's got such a soothing mood. And many dank memes surrounding it too.👌 I can definitely get down with some vaporwave.

Dude I love that you love that Macintosh song too!!! I discovered it from looking at those "Most satisfying video in the world" vids on YouTube hahahaha. And I'm really glad you like The Trip I fuckin love that shit too. It was hard waiting those few months for the song to come out I was dying to tell steemit. P. S. I didn't know vaporwave was a word I learned something today

I haven't seen those videos, are they worth checking out? Yeah vaporwave has been an interesting movement in electronic music in the past few years. One of those so called "microgenres" like chillwave or witch house.

Bahahahaah witch house?? Dude I gotta do my research. I'm out of the loop. I've heard of chillwave though.

It's your lucky day! I found the video I discovered the song from. Just a heads up you might go deep down the "Most Satisying Video In The World" rabbit hole like I did.

I've seen these before! These videos are great and aptly titled. And something about this tune is absolutely perfect for the visuals.

Excellent review. This is an awesome project. I always forget to check in with these cats so I am glad I found this post.

Thanks my man I'm glad u like them! Yea Ive heard their remixes and edits throughout the years, this ep is a little more different than those but some of their best work yet! Have to catch them live at some point

Oh yeah I really would seeing them live.

I love the rift on the first bandcamp song! had me feelin' it :D
