One of his most popular works, written when Edvard Grieg was just 24 years old, in 1868, in the town of Søllerød, Denmark, the "Concert for Piano in A minor, op. 16", was the only one effectively completed by the composer.
It is often compared to Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto, because it is in the same tonality, has a similar aperture, and a close general style. Incidentally, they both wrote only one piano concert.
The premiere was performed with the soloist Edmund Neupert on April 3, 1869 in Copenhagen under the regency of Holger Simon Paulli. Curiously this is the first concert for piano and orchestra that received a mechanical recording in 1909. Reduced to only six minutes of duration of this thirty, due to the technology of the time.
Grieg, the birthday of the day, reviewed this work at least seven times, usually in a subtle way, but totaling more than 300 differences compared to the original orchestration. The final version of the concert was completed only a few weeks before the death of the composer, and it is this one that has achieved worldwide popularity.
Here in a recording with Arthur Rubinstein on piano at the London Symphony Orchestra under the regency of André Previn.
Hope you like it!
