Reading with your kids

It is important, that from a young age, kids are read to regularly by their parent. Reading is the cornerstone to success in today's society, and without this necessary skill, it is hard to be an active member of the community.

Every night, from around the age of 18 months, we have always read a book to our kids. We have never under-estimated the power of reading something, anything to our children and the effect that it has on their reading ability as they grow older.

Many students that I see with reading difficulties are never read to at home by their parents. Modelling reading habits and reading aloud to kids allows them to be immersed in the oral pronunciation of words. They are then able to connect the written words with the correct pronunciation of the words.

Why do I highlight this fact?

I do so to point out the issues that we have in society today. As parents and families get busier there is less and less time for parents to dedicate time to their kids. In Australia, the cost of living expenses are increasing every year, placing more pressure on parents work more to meet ends meet.

Sometimes, a parents experience at school was not ideal, and their view of education and the need to read with their kids is not valued as much as a person who may have had a much better experience at school. There are a number of different reasons why parents do not dedicate the time to read with their kids.

As I interview students starting school at the age of 5 years old, I can immediately tell whether parents read regularly with their kids.

It is integral, for the society to improve and for each and every student to reach their potential, that we increase the reading rates of kids from a very young age. Firstly we need to instill a love of reading and get children excited about reading. It all starts at home with parents engaging kids in reading and showing them, through reading to them, how exciting a book can be and how important it is to read. This is something I am passionate about to improve the literacy rates and therefore outcomes for all of our kids.

I think I would have been one of those parents you knew didn't read to their kids every night as despite reading to them every night from when they were all babies, the boys didn't become fluent at reading til they were 8-9 (and not from lack of trying especially on the part of the eldest as he really, really wanted to be able to read and not just because his younger sister managed to pick it up at 5).

On the bright side they all like reading, they don't recreationally devour books like I used to at their age, but they do read for both fun and profit :)

Interviews for 5yos sounds pretty hardcore. Are there things that they do that helps you determine whether their reading difficulties are from parents not reading to them vs something like dyslexia or other learning difficulties or is it mostly awesome teacher sense developed from years of experience? :D

You can usually tell from the simple questions and little quizzes we do where a student it at. Any difficulties are usually clear cut too from the testing and conversations with parents. It's not always why children can't read, but in a large number of cases I see it is. My awesome teacher powers are just that.....Awesome???

Great post. Your so right about the importance of reading to your childeren. I still have my childhood books ready to read to my childeren. To be honest, I cannot wait to read every night to them before bed. My girl and I have already bought lots of childeren books. We bought the 'animalia' by Graeme Base the other day :). I have so many architecture and surfing books as well. I just wonder what they will want me to read to them :) It is so exciting to read to childeren and answer the brilliant questions they have, such an enjoyable time, how could you not read to them.

This is very true, @scooter77. Reading to kids is the first and most crucial part in successfully teaching kids to speak, listen and read. But it's true that due to the demands of work and life, kids can only get this from school, which doesn't provide much impact to their learning. So this serves as a refresher to parents to take time to read to their children.

Thanks for this! Cheers! 😊

Great discussion, we do make a habit of reading to our kids every night and actually quite often during the days too. My daughter just loves books and demands to take some to bed with her that she pretends to read to her dolls and our son has an active imagination and enjoys making up a story for us every night before bed. These are such amazing times.

Thanks for this steemit education sharing....
i appreciate this reading ......

thank you for sharing @scooter77

Nice sharing. The more I grew up, the more I agree on the importance of knowledge and reading. Just like in Steemit, if a person seldom reads, he/she wouldn't know how will blockchain technology change our future life and how can we adapt to it

I totally agree with this post. One cannot underestimate the benefits of reading to and with one's children. One of the reasons I'm a creative writer and author today, is because my parents did this for me.

Great Post... Technology has evolved and with its pros has brought some cons also... Reading habits have changed a lot... Busyness of parents nd their attachment to cell phones is making them loose one of the best times which they can spend with their kids... I am a father of two little dolls and believe me when I read some bed time stories to my elder daughter who is 5 yrs old, the happiness on her face is invaluable for me..

great post @scooter77 gretting from me @syafiqal
