You've probably heard by now that there was an attempt to assassinate former President and current candidate Donald Trump on Saturday, July 13th. This is the first time in my life such an attempt has been made. As is often the case with breaking news, some details remain unclear, and conflicting reports about an ongoing incident at the time were even more confusing.
This is also complicated by constant rumors of conspiracy. The previous similar incidents are the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981, which includes allegations of intimidation by associates of the Bush family; the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which also may be connected to the Bush clan in some tellings of the event; and the attempted assassination of Theodore Roosevelt way back in 1912. This last incident has no rumors of ties to political rivals, but I mention it because I predict comparisons will be drawn between Trump and his Bull Moose blowhard predecessor.
The Democrats are already in disarray as Joe Biden's deterioration and incapability can no longer be covered up. They've tied themselves so tightly to identity politics that Kamela Harris is the most likely candidate simply because she's a "woman of color," and as Vice President, it's her turn. Never mind the complete absence of charisma, leadership, or evidence of talent she exudes. If identity as a female minority was the DNC concern, they shouldn't have undermined Tulsi Gabbard. She has charisma, considerably deeper knowledge, a military background, experience as both state and federal representative, plus a much better pro-peace foreign affairs stance. But she left the DNC in 2022. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. might have been another effective candidate, but the Democrats are opposed to anyone who dares question the COVID regime in spite of his potential to effectively challenge Trump's hawkishness on "Operation Warp Speed," lockdowns, and federal spending.
However, all of that drama pales in comparison to Trump's status now as a survivor of an assassination attempt. This is an opportunity for Trump to move from "convicted felon" to "survivor" in the most public way possible. And I have already heard the rumor mills of conspiracy theory swirling away. I doubt HIVE's resident marksman extraordinaire @galenkp would have taken an ear-clipping warning shot at 140-ish meters, yet the folks who want a Hollywood drama are already saying it was that based on... nothing. No one is reporting any ties between the shooter and any political movement as of this post, but it's already a Deep State or Democrat plot in some circles I'm sure.
As a wider picture, is assassination ever really a good policy? I don't think so. I want to make it absolutely clear that I do not approve of vigilante justice or assassination attempts against any current or former elected official. Do we need Nuremberg trials for drug warriors and COVID Karens? Maybe. Do we leap to rooftop snipers? No. The perverse nature of politics feeds on violence, whether government inflicts it directly, or people use violence in an effort to alter government to better suit their own agendas. I'm no Trump fan, but that doesn't mean I endorse giving him sudden acute lead poisoning, either. But I'll also say I can hit a pie plate at 150 yards, so what's this dead loser's excuse?
Don't plan to overthrow government with violence. Undermine it until it is so impotent that the power-hungry want to end themselves.
130 metres is a very easy shot for almost anyone with the most basic of skills with most rifle calibres from about a .556 upwards so I think the guy rushed it and simply missed hence the back up shots he panic-sprayed before he got blasted by the Police sniper. The spray situation even demonstrates desperation...He should have taken a breath, re-aimed and sent it, one round not a spray...that would have ended trump but the guy was in panic I think.
Had he taken a deep breath and aimed for centre mass Trump would be dead or critically injured. He went for a head shot (or centre mass and was a terrible bloody shooter) which at that range for a trained shooter is no worries but someone in a panicked state without much skill and with attention focused on him from Police snipers...Trump is lucky this dude was inept.
Why I think he was panicked/rushed is that people on the ground were already calling out and yelling about a guy on the roof with a gun (some saw him "bear crawl" across the roof into his shooting position and were shouting he had a gun), and that was drawing SS and Police attention, which is why the shooter was neutralized so quickly after his shots I believe.
I wasn't there of course, I don't know all the details, motives and so on...But what I know is a 130 metre shot is generally a walk in the park and I don't think this inept character sent it as a warning shot...and I also think the shooter wasn't someone with much skill at all.
"'Tis only a flesh wound"! ---- Monty Python :)
Lol...t'was only a flesh wound indeed, one that'll leave a powerful and lasting message I think.
Trump is not the kind of guy who seems good at "getting the message." His supporters will absolutely rally behind him, though, and this is a major propaganda loss for the Democrats on top of Biden's debate performance and recent public speaking "gaffes."
I don't know the guy and I'm not there so I see only what the news services let me, and even th n I try to avoid it. Time will tell what happens I guess.
It's times like this I envy your distance from US nonsense.
We have our own issues here but in comparison they are insignificant generally, so I understand the comment above.
Yeah, that is why I don't buy the "warning shot" allegations. That was attempted murder by headshot, no doubt about it.
Was it a lone wolf, or an idiot the FBI egged on? that's a lot harder to say, but the level of tension simmering under the surface of US politics is plenty of motive for someone a bit unhinged.
I was pretty chilled when I saw it...this is the stuff that moves countries to the tipping point (think World War One when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated) and America is a powder keg already from an outsiders perspective.
Will we ever know why, who, how, what and so on? Possibly, but will it be the truth, (whole truth?) I seem to think Trump just won the election because of this...we'll know in about a hundred or so days. (That image of blood on his head, the defiant face and upraised fist...with the Stars and Stripe behind...powerful imagary.
EDIT: And yep, attempted assassination by headshot, no doubt and I agree.
The comments on accuracy are spot on. When I was speaking with my brother on this the comment made was:
Of course we know the shooter was a democrat........
because he missed!
lol
Carry on.
Initial reports last night said he was registered as a Republican, but that doesn't really say anything other than paperwork was filed, and it'll be a while before any facts can be winnowed from the rumors.
That's actually true, but the shooter also donated to "left-leaning" PACs, so who knows. Bear in mind that plenty of Republicans can't stand Trump either. What we do know is that he was such a terrible shot that he got rejected from his high school rifle club. The fact that he managed to kill a member of the audience is just plain bad luck.
BTW I heard about this on Substack right when it happened. Any specific question you have, there's already an entire article about it. Ask away and I will point you in the right direction.

.I don't trust the alphabet agencies to investigate. This reeks of an inside job, just like all the deliberate failires in the JFK case (route of JFKs motorcade violated protocols and gave gunmen slow pace and clear shots.)
It seems odd to me as an armchair analyst a rooftop within rifle range wasn't fully secured by the Secret Service, but I hesitate to say there was a deliberate opening for assassination. It's not impossible, of course, but I have a high burden of proof for such claims.
I am older and more cynical. I know human evil is almost limitless apart from the redeeming power of Jesus.
I think you will enjoy this take then:

Thanks, that was interesting.
We are supposed to believe a "lone wolf" 20yo boy did this with no help. Please! This 61yo has seen and experienced too much to accept that. You don't raise 6 kids without learning to detect when people are trying to cover their sixes. That shooter was a mere Oswald. Find the "helpers" who gave him time and opportunity. Find out who paid for the bullets.
I also have a conspiracy theory...
Has anyone considered that this terrible shot was supposed to miss? Just saying, Trump will get a big boost from this, and he's not above deadly theatrics.
Some antics of pre-presidential Trump...
I can't take anyone seriously when they say "that shot was supposed to miss" or "supposed to clip his ear." It only shows ignorance of the variables involved in shooting.
I would never claim it was supposed to clip his ear, but I wouldn't put Trump above the theatrics of paying a guy to fire over his head.
I don't really think it's likely, but I can't dismiss it.
No shortage of hate and violence in USA so not surprising there was an attempted assassination on a political leader. We live in a #TooFuckeh world. !LOLZ
Was the rally attendee(s) shot before Trump?
Hard to understand why cops and Secret Service did not respond to someone walking around dressed in camo and carrying a rifle. How bad can one be at their job? Not the first time we see someone get killed and it could have been easily prevented just by doing the job you were trained to do.

It is surprising, though. Look past the reporting, and violent crime rates have been plummeting for decades with only a small comparative uptick during the past few years. Political tensions are high, but no one committed this kind of violence against Obama or Biden. There was another high-profile attack against Republicans a few years ago, though, when Rand Paul and others were attacked during a baseball game.
If that is true then that is great but in my understanding, USA does not score well when compared to other democracies around the world.
Remember, there are a lot of attempts of violence that do get prevented. In this case, it may have been just good luck for Trump. He may be the Orange Jesus after all. !LOLZ #TooFuckeh

It's readily verifiable from the FBI violent crime statistics. It started to fall before the Clinton-era "assault weapon ban" went into effect, and continued to decline long after Bush allowed that law to sunset in spite of the economic collapse in 2008 and ongoing socioeconomic problems. We have increased media saturation of sensationalist reporting, not an explosion of violence. What violence remains is associated primarily with gangs and black market drug conflicts.
I hear you. I'm all for improvement. Only suggesting that things look different when you make a comparison to other countries. In which case, it looks bad for both governing parties.
Looks like irresponsible rhetoric is coming home to roost.
Could you clarify?
You can only tell everyone he's an "existential threat" for so long before someone acts on it.
I agree there. Trump has been subjected to an unprecedented level of public condemnation, unfortunately not for the things where he most needed it, and often for transparent fabrications.
