Imagine the situation:
Its 2018, economical colapse, no shops, chaos everywhere, postapocalyptic earth... etc.
You are hungry, neightbor that you dont know personaly, have a lot of food, and you with your family have nothing to eat. He is alone and you have gun. What would you do?
Keep my firearm hidden and offer to join up with him. If he asks what I offer show him my weapon, but don't disclose my ammo count.
You didn't mention that my neighbor is male or female but I have both in my family so - he/she is alone and might be interested in companionship as well. This can help deepen the bond of joining together.
Now - if they just refuse outright - I produce my firearm and take what we need to survive. Then decide whether to leave a potential enemy alive or simply close this chapter and move on knowing they won't be a problem in the future.
Trade him some silver coins for food. If he doesn't want that, bullets for HIS gun, 'cause if he don't have one, someone else will get him.

hard to tell I guess. I personally would team up. Providing fire power he provides food probably you need both, and you always wanna be on the good side of the gun anyway
