Lets view the problem as a word question. Each row would read A + B =C (with the 3c box having a ?) In all of the "C" boxes, "A" is the second biggest, and "B" is the absolute biggest...Therefore we can throw out choice a & choice b. So the choice is between c & d, the question becomes have we ever seen a repeating shape (such as in choice d) the answer is no. That is why the answer is "C"
