VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Railway Division, like the entire South Central Railway (SCR) zone, has seen an upswing in train punctuality despite ongoing infrastructure developmental works, said SCR general manager, Vinod Kumar Yadav, at a review meeting. Speaking at the event, Yadav said, “Vijayawada division plays a critical role in train operations on Indian Railways, owing to its logistical jurisdiction, which links all other directions of the Indian Railways system in southern India.” Vijayawada DRM, R Dhananjayulu, highlighted the issues which were affecting punctuality of trains in the division. He brought to fore, the fact that the rail works, which are progressing fast, require regulation of trains for small intervals.
Dhananjayulu said: “The long-term objective is to strengthen and expand the network with optimal safety standards.” He also informed the GM about the assistance required for ongoing works, which include remodelling of yards to clear bottlenecks, electrification, and other developmental works in the division.
Vinod Kumar advised the principal heads of departments and divisional railway manager to identify issues impacting the running of passenger and goods trains. The GM suggested for broad classification of the issues into three categories – short term, medium and long term and plan for appropriate action. Guntur: Around 100 students of National Green Core (NGC) conducted a cleanliness drive on the banks of Krishna river in the temple town Amaravati on Friday.
During the three-hour long cleanliness drive, the students removed the garbage scattered on the river bank. They interacted with the pilgrims and tourists visiting the bank and urged them not to throw plastic or other wastes in the river.
The students made an appeal to the locals that they should give up the use of plastic carry bags in temple towns where so many people come on pilgrimage. They came from GNR model school, Narendra public school, Sumedha and Lotus public school with their teachers.

The NGC district coordinator D Tirupati Reddy said that they have organised the event, keeping in mind the World Environment Day, which falls on June, 5. He said that students should take part in such events right from their childhood so that they would be best ambassadors to protect the environment.
“Since plastic bags have become indispensable, people should know how to manage it. The failure in taking a proper management method will be harmful for the public health,” said Tirupati Reddy.
Centre for Environment Education (CEE) district convenor G Vijay said that they are implementing Swachh Grahi programme in all the schools.
According to NGC district project officer, Shaik Ghouse, beaches are getting polluted with the plastic wastes. He said that they are making people aware of three R’s- Refuse, Recycle and Re-use.
