Not a bad introduction.

I have only one minor criticism. Can you believe that? lol

While "operating" the r-complex and the limbic system is done on auto-pilot, rational thought costs energy and a conscious effort, literally.

There's a difference between rational thought and intentional thought. Rational thought can require a conscious effort but you can consciously make an effort to arrive at some bullshit as well. (Ergo the Buddhist emphasis on "right" thinking.)

The primary distinction between the two systems are :
On is automatic and doesn't require effort.
The other requires conscious effort.

Heads up, see dual process theory

Some trivia:

When esoteric systems talk about "remembering yourself" they are talking about "remembering yourself", they're referring to the use of the conscious system, rather than coasting on autopilot. When they talk about being "asleep" it's a reference to running on auto-pilot.

When they talk about man split up into many smaller personalities, they're referring the unconscious, automatic part is made up of many thousands of processes all running in parallel . Example quote from Thelema, talking (poetically) about the shift from conscious effort to falling back on autopilot.

“The name of the Dweller in the Abyss is Choronzon, but he is not really an individual. The Abyss is empty of being; it is filled with all possible forms, each equally inane, each therefore evil in the only true sense of the word — that is, meaningless but malignant, in so far as it craves to become real. (override the conscious process and shift to autopilot = become real) These forms swirl senselessly into haphazard heaps like dust devils, and each such chance aggregation asserts itself to be an individual and shrieks, “I am I!” though aware all the time that its elements have no true bond; so that the slightest disturbance dissipates the delusion just as a horseman, meeting a dust devil, brings it in showers of sand to the earth." (conscious effort disengages the autopilot system for whatever you focus on. You type on autopilot all the time, but when you put effort into it, it control is shifted to controlled process.)

Also, the focus of mindfulness as a process is to develop the conscious process over the automatic process.

Cheers!
