Perceiving Life in Simultaneous Contrast| Our Eyes, Our Window

Illusions get to me and i simply love them!

I ain't referring to magic tricks here but a few twicks here and there or placing something here rather than there to make us see things different. Basically, I am talking about our perception.

Take a look at the smaller square boxes. You see one appears lighter than the other. I say appears because the boxes are infact of the same shade!

You probably scrolled up to check that..

But really, they are the same. They appear different because of something called Simultaneous Contrast which is based on lateral inhibition(inhibition transmitted across the retina

What is Simultaneous Contrast

Put simply, Simultaneous Contrast occurs when our perception of the brightness of color of one area is affected by the adjacent or surrounding area.

So your perception of the first small box being brighter than the other is because of the difference in their background. The darker background made it look bright.

A practical example of this?

Imagine this with me

Step 1: Place a 'yellow' (slang for fair skin) girl amongst melanin beauties. You realise the the yellow pawpaw will stand out as being fair to you.

Step2: Place the yellow girl in the mist of girls way fairer than she is.. More like 'yellow pawpaw' kind of girls, you perceive her as being darker.
