I'm about to share something with you on an area i enjoyed learning about. Something on how we as humans perceive things the way we do.
Specifically today, I will be sharing with you how you and I sense depth information depicted in pictures.
Translation
How the Heck do I sense depth when i look at a picture on my phone??!!
The answer?
Pictorial cues: are sources of depth information depicted from pictures. These cues are what get us saying stuff like "Why is that bucket at the back of the wardrobe behind the man?"
So, what are some of these cues?
- Occlusion: this occurs when an object covers or partially covers another object. You see how the red square seems to cover the green and so the green is percieved as being behind it.
- Texture Gradient: Elements that are equally spaced appear to be closely packed as the distance increase.
Take for example the image above, you sense distance when you see the segmentation on the ground become clustered.
- Shadows: we all know what they are. Heck! You hardly spend a day without them. Excepts you lock yourself in a dark room all day.
You get to see how shadows help from the image above. They have a way of telling which is closer and which is not.
- Perspective convergence: next time you look at a picture or painting that has houses and maybe people in it. Look closely, you just might find this being used.
You see it in paintings of a road as well or like the picture above.
Perspective convergence occurs when two parallel lines seem to converge at a point. Just like two parallel sides of the track seem to meet at a point.

wow!!!! This is taking my mind to a whole new level of perspective. Thank you
Learning about sensation and perception was so enlightening interesting.
Would be making post about it regularly.
Thanks @aristokratos... You're an OG
I will look forward to subsequent post. You know you're amazing right!👍👍
and I really don't know what OG means?😶
