I'm in two minds about this. You're correct that there is no hamburger in nature, but the marketing and fact that the Beyond Burger feels the need to 'bleed' is a clear emulation of the meat version.

I had a Beyond Burger two months ago. Although it was cold, because the restaurant had messed up another of my party's orders and I therefore waited twenty minutes to eat it, it was deeply enjoyable. I think the 'blood' had 'coagulated' in that time period so it didn't seem to 'bleed'.

But my ultimate tuppence is that I do miss the density of meat in my burgers. Meat has real bite and, since it is horror in every other way, the Beyond Burger succeeds in restoring this texture without the inherent bad things.

I would rather it didn't 'bleed' though.


Here's another conundrum: Memphis Meats are close to commercialising the creation of meat from animal cells. The CEO, Uma Valeti, was interviewed on Sam Harris' podcast a couple of years ago. He did an amazing job of countering objections from many angles. I need to listen again, but this feels like a huge ethical landmark.
