The difficult but not impossible mission of children psychologists

in #psychology6 years ago (edited)

Hello guys, good afternoon.

Today I will talk about a topic I have always seen in relation to children psychologists, both those who work in the clinic and those who work in some school or institution that deals with children.

I emphasize that I am not a child psychologist and never dealt with "psychological environment" with children, at most, I attended the same place, so if any child psychologist finds something wrong in my text, feel free to correct!!!!

Well, here's the thing. The work of a child psychologist, from what I saw, is beautiful and extremely necessary, because, he manages to combine his knowledge to the practice of dealing with a child. It is at this stage of life that the person is forming his personality, so it is extremely essential that she take care of her mind to become a well-developed adult. Most of the mental disorders that people present in adulthood are formed when they are children or adolescents.

Children are very vulnerable beings who rely extremely heavily on their family to take care of themselves. There is no autonomy at this stage of life. The ingenuity of the child makes her seek the care and protection of her parents. The problem in this question is when your parents (or adoptive caregivers) have traits in your personality that hinder the development of this child, whether purposeful or not.

There are children who really need treatment, such as some with ADHD (attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity), depression, anxiety, parental alienation issues, separation of parents, etc....

However, there are those that do not have anything, besides an immense desire of the parents to manipulate them to be an extension of their life, or, to use them as a source of "emotional discharge".

With this, one of the parents seeks a psychologist and begins to report questions of the Son (a) saying that this presents "problem of Behavior". It is one of the most common things to hear from parents (or caregivers) in an office.

Usually the first consultation is done with those who take the child to the attendance. Only after this consultation, which can be more than one, depending on the case (sometimes the account of who takes the child is great and it is necessary to reap more data to make a good case history, then the psychologist marks more than one care for the caregiver who take the child (the ) The child will be met.

However, in this care with the parent or caregiver who took the child, the psychologist (a) notes that the issue is more related to the parent itself (a) than the child itself. There are many parents with bad issues in their life who can't even get a handle on them and throw it into society. Some for wickedness and others for not realizing that the matter itself is within them.

When these cases happen, and are not rare to happen, the psychologist has two paths. The first is to talk to the parents and make them think about why they take the child to attendance, making them reflect if it is not a problem that is within them or if it is something related to a lack of dialogue between parents and children. For this, it is necessary that the psychologist (a) who realize this has a lot of "waist game" to deal with the situation. You will need to have a very flexible and calm personality to deal with all the types of parents that appear in the office. That's no longer an easy thing to do.

On the other hand, there are parents who have a perverse personality (leaning towards narcissism or psychopathy) who, in some ways, manipulate, despise or harm their children in some way. In this case, the most experienced psychologist will be able to verify this and make a complaint of ill-treatment in the Child Welfare Council, who shall ascertain the situation.

When it's physical violence, it's easier to check. However, when mental/psichology violence occurs, it is more difficult because, besides being something more difficult to prove than physical abuse, because it leaves no external marks, it can be something of the child's imaginary. In case it's not, a huge investigation will need to be done with this child and the parents. If parents are "purposeful abusers" (personalities with a tendency to perverse psychopathy/narcissism as stated above), they will tend to hide these molestations. They will usually show that they have a unique personality that they really are, leaving well hidden these perverse traits of personality. In addition, the child generally will not be able to understand that it is suffering these abuses, because, in their mind, as they do not have much contact with the outside world and with families considered "normal", will tend to think that their family environment is normal and interpret These abuses as something common.

However, verified and confirmed the issue of some abuse, another major problem appears, which is the reason for the text.

If the professional denounces, may suffer a process or even be ill spoken, because when the person possesses these traits of perverse psychopathy/narcissism, she tends to have an excellent social role for society and, at home, shows her true personality ( Social role is the mask that people wear to live in society, some necessary and others to cover up a perverse personality). That is, it will not be easy to prove the complaint made.

If he accepts the situation and does nothing, he will be acting in a unethical way. You will be suffering from coercion and possibly be too afraid to denounce or you may just be a scoundrel who thinks only of money.

In conclusion, being a child psychologist is very enriching, because it helps children who are usually vulnerable and naïve beings to deal with their problems in a better way, however, can be a shot in the foot when dealing with parents with related characteristics above, Who tend to be very manipulative and persuasive!!!!!!

In such cases, it is very necessary for the person to be prepared to exercise this profession and to study very well the Guidelines Handbook of the Psychology Council, know issues related to the legal area, form alliances with other professionals in the same area to have Support these hours and always act thinking about preventing damage to your work so as not to have legal problems in these types of cases.

I hope that the work of professionals in this area will always be enriching and productive, both for them and for their small patients!!!

This is really very nice post. Being a health proffesional let me add some value in it.

There are some misconception about ADHD
( Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
and parents often take this disorder very seriously and underestimate their suffering children. There are around 7% people suffering from ADHD. Some world's influencing people even struggled with this rare disorder during their childhood. So don't underestimate your children if they are passing through their tough time. Very first misconception is, parents think their children can't do anything if they are not performing well in school.
While fact is that when children with ADHD are able to find something that they’re passionate about, they will pay hundred percent attention to achieve it harder than anyone else could even imagine often times crushing the competition.
They may not pay attention on black board of class room and boring lecture of teachers but once they will find something interesting to do by whole heart, they will keep doing it on any condition. They will tolerate hardship and can do anything to achieve what they want.
Here are example:

  1. Walt Disney, The Founder Of Disneyland.
  2. Michael Phelps, The Most Decorated Olympian Of All Time
  3. Will Smith, Actor/Producer/Rapper
  4. John F. Kennedy, The 35th President Of The United States
  5. Jimm Carrey: Canadian-American actor, comedian, impressionist, screenwriter, and producer.

Story of Jimm carry is most inspiring i found that how he bettled with ADHD and became superstar of Hollywood.

So dear parents do not underestimate your children. Let them do what they want and love what they do. Motivate them and admire if they achieve little bit success. They are normal as other children but can't perform well in school only. And our history is filled with hundreds of influencing people who couldn't performed well in school.

Thank you @julisavio for this excellent post. I know as a child I would have benefited by having a child psychologist to help me understand my situation.

At 2-weeks old, my mother started having schizophrenic episodes. She would be in hospital for weeks and I remember many times medics coming into the house as a little boy, taking my mother away. No one around me would talk to me and help me understand.

Luckily, I have always been a very self-reflective person and knew instinctively this wasn't normal and that it wasn't her fault... But it wasn't until 12 years ago that I realized I was blaming myself for her condition and didn't even know it, since she was healthy and ok until I was born.

Once I realized this, something changed and I felt free.

Now I help others through coaching. It is wonderful to be able to do this every day.

I wonder what must have been hard for you to go through this situation, especially for being in an age so vulnerable when we're not with our rational thinking. I thought that the fact that the adults don't explain the situation, may have created this belief that you were guilty by the matter of your mother and the momentary separation of you when she went to the hospital.

I'm glad that you became this professional focused on helping others to deal with their issues.

Thank you very much for reading and comment.
Good afternoon!!!!

This is really important, almost all the problems of the people are generated by an inadequate development in the family environment during youth. It is important that young people grow up in a family environment where the roles of parents and children are well identified and where young people can see parents as role models. This in turn also represents a problem, because if the parents are not good, they will generate problems for their children, and these for their children, which perpetuates the cycle until the intervention of a psychologist is done to help develop a behavior positive.

Excellent comment, Martin. I think you learned that in your time travel. You've touched a very important point. Children who suffer some kind of abuse, if they do not reflect on it, will tend to do the same thing with their children, when they have them, because they were the way they "learned to live life."

Thank you very much for reading and commenting!!!!

I think there are children who really need the help of a psychologist because many times can be affected by the various situations lived at home with your family, school or any environment in which they are, I think it is important to note all these Signs to resolve to say in some way that problem and that does not affect the personal and professional life of the individual so it is important to communicate with the child to create a good mental development

That's right, Miss Genesis.
Communication is a very important point in which empathy can be created and the relationship between parents and children develops better.

@julisavio hello 👋 sir, Wow It's very nice to read your post. It's a very nice topic that you wrote about in the post. It's okay you are Today we do not try to understand most children. We mean parents of children should understand what my children want. That would be very good use with him as well. Do not be angry with him. Never have to face any bad behavior in front of him. Her parents play the most important role of a child. Did you say that ???

thank you for read and comment!

@julisavio hello 👋 sir Thank you so much sir. But I think Steemit would give him an upvote because of saying thanks to someone he would be very happy, what did he say

Today is the first time I came to know that there are child phychologists as well...
In my opinion from what I read above is they are good but I think parents should be the main people who should take responsibility for the child and be with them and support the children instead of these professionals...

Agree bloog-fictions. Parents need to be the main reference point of their children. The problem is when this happens and abuses happen...

Thanks for reading and commenting

With the case of adopted children I think the case is completely different...there psychologists are a must...

Agree. Parents need to be the main reference point of their children. The problem is when this happens and abuses happen...

Thanks for reading and commenting

I agree that parents are and should be the main source of support. Nonetheless, child psychologists can be of help particularly in some situations.

Take the case of adoptive parents, for example. Often the adoptees are children that come from abusive and dysfunctional homes, which imply that they have a high chance of development some pathologies if don't have them yet actually. A parent, even if is one of the most warm, attentive and responsible, probably would have some problems dealing with a child who suffer from any patology or historial of abuse unless prepared in child psychology at a professional level. That is why (sometimes, at least) the close observation and orientation from a professional can be of a great help, if not necessary, for the normative development of the child

Yes. Excellent, Kaththom Child psychologists can intervene and help too much to deal with this kind of situation that you cited, both attending these children and helping parents is dealing with them.

Thanks for reading and commenting!!!!

Hello, the article was great.

How do you feel about juvenile crime and judging to the extent of how they should be tried in court, for example, child killers?

Young people under 18 who kill children? I think each country has legislation on it. There are cases where the person has some mental disorder that needs to be institutionalized and arrested in a psychiatric place, others she is a psychopath and needs to be arrested and other cases, in lesser number that occurred something that stirred a lot with the emotional of the person for her to have FE Ito that. In the latter case, I think the person needs to go through a process of treatment and not prison. But to do that, they need professionals from various areas to work together to see which case each is inserted.

Thanks for reading and comment!

Oh no, your explanation is great, but I meant killers that are children, for example Willie James Bosket, Jr.

I have a daughter, one year old & so is the reason I read this blog carefully. Thanks for the information.

thank you for read and comment

The topic itself is so interesting.
