Negative thoughts - coping

in #psychology8 years ago (edited)

I re-did that post to reach a maximum of persons because I think it's helpful...

We all have conversation with ourselves. Some call it "internal dialogue". We also have automatic thoughts that come to us without any warning. They are thoughts, images, memories, or even physical sensations that goes trough our mind in a flash. They almost can be considered like reflexes.

Sometimes they roll in our head, we call it "ruminations". Those thoughts and ruminations cause emotions, and when they are negative you can start feeling depressed, anxious or angry. It's hard to live with these constant feelings. That's where you have to intervene.

There are a few tricks I can give you to start rapidly diminish those thoughts and in the next article, I'll go deeper. Start by trying these first...

When you are aware of a negative thought:

-Force yourself to think about, for example , the names if your cousins from the youngest to the oldest or the order of the songs of one of your playlist. Do this each time a negative thought comes to mind even if it's 20 times an hour!... Overtime you will see a difference. The idea is, to refocus your brain on another subject.

-Beware of the music, TV, movies you watch because it really does affect our mood.

-Write your negative thoughts on a piece of paper then, tear it and throw it away or even better, burn it safely.

-Warmth is known to have an effect on negative feelings. Drink tea, take a warm bath or shower, hold a hot pack.

-Meditation is wonderful for stopping negative feelings. If you're not familiar with the process, begin by laying down, close your eyes and think and picture a white blanket drying in the wind. Concentrate on the whiteness. Do it for as long as you can, it can be from 30 seconds to 5 minutes , any amount of time is good. Try lasting a little bit longer each time. The purpose of this exercise is to give a break to your brain... ;)
