Common sense is definitely very uncommon these days!

                     

Yesterday after a visit to my doctor, he gave me a prescription for some ampules for a specific muscle relaxer. Injections usually works faster, so I prefer to have an injection rather than drinking tablets for pain. We stopped at the pharmacy on our way home, to fill up the prescription, but I was totally stunned by the pharmacy assistant who clearly didn't know what she was doing. 

I handed her the prescription and she smiled at me. I smiled back. She read the prescription, then looked up and smiled again. I smiled back. 

"I'll be right back" she said.

I nodded. 

She came back a minute or so later shaking her head.  

"I can't help you with this" she said.  

"Why can't you help me with this?" I asked, already annoyed.  

'The prescription says ten, and I only have five."

"But that is not so much of an issue is it? If you give me five, then you can order more and send it to me when it arrives."

"Oh yes, I could do that..." she said, now frowning as if I asked her to move a mountain. 

She typed away vigorously on the computer as if she was writing an essay. 

I smiled patiently, while tapping my foot lightly.

"Do you know how to administer this?" 

"Well no I said, but I don't inject myself, my mother does, so she knows."

It was her turn to nod.  "I see..."

I smiled at her and watched as she called her supervisor. 

They had a short discussion and looked at me as if I ordered some serious high dosage of a banned product. 

They both smiled at me and the supervisor stepped closer and signed the prescription and walked away. 

She then proceeded to put the ampules in a brown paper packet and sealed it.  That will be R58,50 she said.

I smiled and asked:  

"You did not put in the syringes or the needles did you? How do you expect us to administer the injection?  Should I just drink the liquid?"

She laughed.  "Oh no, now I have to start all over again."

About 5 minutes later I finally walked out of there with the prescription and my syringes. 

Even though this lady was obviously qualified this was the only thought that came up in my head as I walked away.  

                           

 What exactly is common sense?

Logical sense or common sense -  good sense and sound judgment in practical matters. 

In all practical sense, common sense is used in a logical way of thinking. People do things because they are supposed to, but there are many shorter ways to get to the end-result.  The sad thing is that people often don't think for themselves, so they just keep on doing it the same way as before. 

In my logical mind, if I can find a shorter way to complete something, then that is the route I'm going to follow, but it is weird how little people actually use their common sense. 

To think logically means to think practical!  

When you have to complete a given task, you have to ask yourself the following questions:   

• What exactly am I supposed to do?
• Why am I doing this?
• Is there an easier way to do this?

To know the specifics of a given task, can save you time and often money as well!   

If common sense was as common as the name implied then people would never land in certain situations. People would not be spending money on things that they do not really need. Young people would not spend their money on buying alcohol and drugs and exposing themselves to things that they should not be involved with. Unfortunately people do explore everything in life, but somewhere along the line, you should actually learn your lesson, so that you don't do the same thing again. 

                             

How can you improve your common sense?

Logical reasoning

• To improve your logical reasoning skills, it is vitally important to practice your reasoning skills. One of the best ways to improve logical thinking is to play logic games on your phone. Games are not always as bad as people think. Read a lot, because reading builds your vocabulary and it improves your memory. 
• Another way is to compile a list of questions that has more than one possible answer.  

If you ask a question like:

What is 5 + 5?

Most of us would instinctively know that the answer is ten.

But 

If you ask a question like:

Why do Giraffes have long necks?  

You would possibly answer that they need long necks to eat the leaves high up in the trees.  Not everyone would come up with the same answer though, although that might be the most logical answer.

It is always good to try and better ourselves.  If you improve your logical thinking skills then you might improve the way that people see you.  Teach yourself to think more critically and many doors might open for you.
