When nobody knows who you are, you're likely to be more outspoken. People with mental health issues know the how paralyzing it can be the fear of being judged. By shielding themselves with online anonymity, they can feel free to talk about their problems. Only their fake online identity is exposed, protecting them from bullying and all sorts of attacks.

Victims of sexual abuse often have great difficulty finding support. Such stigmatized issues can benefit from anonymity, allowing the victims to talk without revealing their identity.

People usually use social media like Facebook and Twitter to talk about their lives and feelings. But in these sites, all your family and friends can see what you're up to... And they can also judge you.
Mental health issues are still a sensitive issue, and often not even your family will understand.
Also, it might not be a good idea to let your boss and co-workers know you're dealing with difficult stuff.

In a chat room, you can be however you like without fear of being judged. Telling the truth can be liberating — it can even be addictive.

Many people become more comfortable using their real identity only after using anonymous identities.

Expressing your feelings in a free environment can be very liberating and even cathartic.

I love this post, and totally agree. Anonymous chatrooms are where it's at. I've been helping run an anonymous anime-based forum for 7 years and 3 months now and it's always been beautiful.

We migrated over to Discord about 19 months ago and it's been a blessing. Planning our events and game nights with a good discord bot, hanging with each other in voice chats, and just plain being able to be ourselves without fear.

Anonymous chatrooms are life.
