This is a very beautifully written piece. Not all who appears to be listening during a conversation session are actually listening. Sometimes one's past encounter clogs one's mind so much that listening becomes impossible. This is very evident in your encounter with the Uber driver. At any rate, this line is the main ingredient of the solution to inattentive listening.....

....in order to empathically listen to someone we need to mute that noise, to turn our mind into a white canvas, and this is the difficult part of it, the part that requires great effort°..
