RE: Being Introverted is NOT a Personality Defect in Need of "Fixing!"

in #psychology8 years ago

I consider myself to be introverted but having said that i feel that people tend to oversimplify the concept of being introverted or extroverted. I think people should not succumb to binary divisions. Its a personality trait sometimes fabricated by issues we have with how the world works, or family situations or whatever really. The only way i can explain the fact that most introverts sometimes (rarely, though) secretively want to function the other way around is by denying the binarities. I have witnessed a strange phenomenon with several of my friends who needed to study very hard during their university life. They've started with a fairly popular stimulant amongst student - Modafinil - and what they experienced was a comple rewire of how they react to the outside world. Introverts became extroverts within a year which begs the question - are we like this because we are just born like that or is it something we didnt develop during our formative years? Are wonders of modern medicine actually capable of a complete personality shift or is it just a temporary psychosis? There are many questions around how our biology interacts with something simple as a general personality trait.

Agreed, most psychology is far from simple... your initial statement about binary divisions reminds me of that old truism: "There are two kinds of people in the world-- those who believe there are two kinds of people in the world, and those who don't"

Temperament theory is, of course, a constantly evolving field. Recent studies in neuroscience are helping identify and isolate those parts of brain function that are inherent and genetic vs those which are learned or created by violent or long-term psychological trauma.

Whereas I appreciate the benefits of psycho-pharmaceuticals-- especially as short term remedies while deeper issues are being addressed-- I always (and this is just personal opinion) come back to the reality that I prefer to make myself the best possible version of my authentic self, rather than getting invested in artificially creating an alternative self.
