How To Use the Google Search Engine Of Your Mind To Find What You Want Most In Life

in #psychology7 years ago

A few months ago I experienced something quite odd...

search1.jpg
mari lezhava @marilezhava

At the time I was driving around town in my friend's Silver Toyota Prius while she was traveling around Europe for a month.

The car was really great and I was really happy to have it.

However, about a week into having it I started noticing something really strange starting to happen...

Suddenly, out of nowhere I started seeing Silver Priuses everywhere I went.

Sometimes I would drive to the grocery store, grab groceries, come back to the parking lot and almost get into the wrong car... because it was a Silver Prius.

I would take a walk in my neighborhood and turn the corner and... Silver Prius.

Turn right and... Silver Prius.

Take a left and... Silver Prius.

I was shocked by how many Silver Priuses I was seeing!

It was like I was a character of the Truman Show, and my reality was merely just a montage of Toyota ad placements!

Not going to lie, it was kind of creepy...

Have you ever bought a new car with a specific color, and then suddenly you start seeing that car color everywhere your go?

Marina Vitale @marina_mv88

Or maybe you meet someone with a rare name like "Bartholomew", only to run into a second and third Bartholomew later in the week?

I think this is a pretty common phenomenon. It happens to me all the time, in more subtle ways that I shared earlier, but nonetheless it happens to me quite often.

The absolutely intriguing part is that there is actually a neurologically based system that causes this phenomenon to happen.

And once I began to understand that system, I started to realize how knowing this could completely transform the way I perceived my life... literally.

The Reticular Activating System

We all have an organ within our brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS).

The RAS is a bundle of nerves at our brainstem that is responsible for filtering the massive amount of information that your sensory organs are constantly throwing at it.

RAS1.jpg

This system is literally designed to filter out sensory input that is coming into your brain.

It's specifically designed to do this so that we can make sense out of the billions of bytes of information that are coming at us on a moment-to-moment basis.

In example...

If you are focusing on "red", then your mind will start searching for more things in your reality that are "red." You might start to notice people wearing more red clothing, driving red cars, reading red books, etc.

cars.jpg
Hans M @brinkles

The beauty of the Reticular Activating System is that it will only focus on the things that we place our focus on.

This is a really important thing to remember so I'll say it again...

The RAS only filters in the information that we place our focus on.

Thus, out of the billions of bits of data that our mind sifts through, the information that the RAS is focusing on is the information that your mind consciously perceives.

This can be information we are consciously or subconsciously focused on, nonetheless whatever we are focusing on is what our RAS will show us the most.

The Google Search Engine Of Your Mind

I like to think of the RAS like the Google search engine of our mind.

On Google, you can search for something and it will give you a list of all the relevant things that are most closely related to the keywords you are searching for.

The search engine is only going to search for items that are associated with the keyword you inputted.

search2.jpg
rawpixel.com @rawpixel

All irrelevant data is discarded.

The RAS seeks information that validates your beliefs (AKA what you are searching for).

It filters the world through the parameters you give it, and your beliefs shape those parameters.

For instance, if you have a positive belief system and are often focused in a positive way, then your mind will often search for things that are “positive” within your reality.

You might start noticing other people who are also behaving in a positive way, when you read the news you might only read the positive stories, or you might believe that the world is a positive place to be or that the environment you live in "feels positive."

Whether or not that is true or not, your mind filters out everything except for the things that are related to what you are searching for.

Your Power Lies Within The Search

Now this is really interesting because if the RAS works like a google search engine...

And we only become aware of the results we receive from the data we input into our mind...

Then all reality is essentially based upon the things that we place our focus on.

So, regardless of if something is happening negatively or not, we might not even notice it if we are focusing on positivity.

happy.jpg
Brooke Cagle @brookecagle

Think about how this could apply to your life in such a powerful way...

If you think you CAN'T do something...

...your mind will look for ways in which you CAN'T DO IT.

...your mind will literally look for people who CANNOT DO THINGS...

...you might even find yourself in situations that make you feel INCAPABLE!

That would be kind of a crappy world to live in, right?

Who would want to do that to themselves!?

The simple answer to that is NO ONE!

This is exactly why it's so important to consciously filter the things that you are focusing on.

What you place into your brain is what you are telling your brain to search for.

It's really that simple.

You're literally creating a reality every moment.

Your perception of the world around you is quite honestly up to you.

How do we effectively utilize the Search Engine of our mind?

Making use of this empowering concept can make the difference between you living the reality you choose (i.e. Your Dreams!), or living a reality that others choose (i.e. Truman Show).

truman show.jpeg

Below I've listed my three steps for making sure that your mind is always focusing in a way that is resourceful and empowering, so that you can experience the reality that you truly deserve!

1. Focus on where you want to go

Instead of focusing on what you're trying to get away from.... focus on where you want to go.

So often we focus on what is wrong, what we don't know, or where we don't want to go.

direction.jpg
Uroš Jovičić @urosjovicic96

Considering the fact that our mind works like a Google Search Engine, it becomes very obvious that thinking in this way could be very detrimental.

If we are searching for where we do not want to go, then we will find more of where we do not want to go.

So when you find yourself in a situation where you are dealing with some sort of issue or problem, instead of focusing on the problem, shift your mindset to looking for the solution or where you want to go.

Ask yourself this:

What is the ideal outcome here? What solutions are available to me right now?

Focus on the solutions that come into your mind and then select the one that seems the most logical to you in the moment.

Even if it's PART of a solution, focusing on a part of the solution can lead to more searching, that ultimately leads to the FULL solution.

The more you focus your mind on the solutions rather than the problem, the easier it will be to find a solution because your mind begins to search your neural network and external environment for the answers.

2. Shift your frame of reference

It's pretty common to wake up in the morning and suddenly feel a sense of anxiety or fear or depression overwhelm your mind.

I experience this all the time, however if I allow my mind to dwell within this space for too long, I notice that my world suddenly feels a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

When I am experiencing this, I know I need to shift my mind's frame of reference.

reference2.jpg
Octavian Rosca @tavi004

The issue here is that my frame of reference is anxiety and fear, and thus, when I think about my business, my relationships, or my life in general, I see it through the filter of anxiety and fear.

You can avoid a lot of frustration by simply focusing on the things that you are grateful for.

By doing this your mind starts to reference the things that are positive and inspiring in your life.

Even though things may be difficult or there may be obstacles in your life, when you begin focusing on what you are grateful for, suddenly the weight that you were feeling (i.e. anxiety and fear) begins to dissipate and it becomes much easier to cultivate a solution-based perspective.

3. Imagine the possibilities

Our imagination is a very important part of our reality.

It's actually a lot more important than we think because when we use our imagination we are essentially telling the mind what to look for.

imagine2.jpg
Nine Köpfer @enka80

When we dream about the things that we want in our life, we are saying to our Search Engine,

“Hey Mind, search for this and give me the best results that you can find within my current reality system.”

Our search results might look something like...

"You should call your friend Jack today”

Or...

“You should attend that party you were invited to.”

We might not understand the conscious meaning behind these gut feelings, but oftentimes gut feelings are based off of what our mind has been searching for!

A really easy way to do this is to visualize your greatest possible life.

I like to do this before I go to bed at night and just imagine a world that is truly amazing where I am doing things that I love, I'm around people that I love, and I'm engaged in something that I truly love doing.

As you put your focus on this and really get into it, you'll start to feel emotions and emotions help to amplify the search result.

yes.jpg
Seth Doyle @sethdoylee

Emotions are like paying for Google AdWords - your search results are even better because you are applying extra specifically focused energy to your mind’s focus.

Doing this will help you more rapidly find what you are searching for.

In Conclusion

I always find it fascinating how the software and programs on a computer are so similar to the software and programs of the human mind.

I really feel like there's a reason for that, we created computers because they are a reflection of what's going on within us.

It makes sense that a search engine would also reflect how we literally search our reality for what we are looking for.

The next time you notice yourself thinking about something in particular, whether that be good or bad…

Recognize that thought, ask yourself if it's a thought that you would want to search for, then either discard the thought or amplify it with your imagination.

By taking control of what our mind filters, we are taking control of how we perceive reality.

And ultimately...

How we experience life.

Happy searching!

(PS: I’m feeling lucky)

I think it goes far deeper, than simply a process of mind, because things are literally drawn to you, as the name you listed that was unusual. To me this was my first clue, that we are dealing with something else, but then it was not to clear.

Then I came upon the law of attraction. This was the key I sought. It answered so many questions. There is something working, that makes things draw near, to whatever you are being, so be mindful of what you are being! that is the secret, to this powerful thought, that whatever your attention is on, more of it will be sought, but not simply to appear as you have seen, in simply random acts, but orchestrated by the universe.

Consider the bible phrase: knock and the door will open. It was brought new meaning to me, by one that I admire, when it was related to this pheonomon, that whatever ye seek it will be answered. the universe finds a way, to draw it to you that which you are. so you can make this work for you, in all ways, shapes and forms.

Abraham-Hicks is the best source I've found, for information related to what you can find. Many great videos on youtube, I like it best when she interacts with an audience. But I've found it all to be true, you cannot have what you want because it gives you the experience of wanting, so you must change this idea, to that of having, then you are being what you want, and you will get more of it. Much like having the Prius, more of it will keep coming. the amazing thing about this, is that more don't notice that it is happening. but then we've been trained not to notice, we've been told this is a purely accidental world. I don't believe it, not anymore.

take care dear brother, glad you lead me to this post. I will follow you and see what you write again. and thanks for reading my post.

yes @klven this all relates back to law of attraction and much of what Abraham-Hicks teaches as well. I went to one of their seminars about 10 years ago... it blew my mind! I couldn't believe how on point the information was. Nowadays I try to share that knowledge in different ways (hence the search engine analogy) so that it's easier to comprehend.

I really appreciate your well thought response here. You and so many others are the reason why I love this community so much. Thank you for sharing and stopping by friend!

This is great. I love this. I'm going to resteem and follow. Good work, I can't wait to read more of your thoughts.

Thanks for sharing this, thou, I don't know this kind of thing exist. Have never experienced this kind of it before and have never seen someone with it. So am totally ignorant of it

Everyone has it! It's in your brain man! ;-)

Love that we can spread this type of information. It is all in us. We have the potential to manifest and live our highest selves. It is content like this that shifts our world in a positive direction.

Namaste Axios

Thanks for that awesome post setting me back on track. You are full of information. I am making you my motivational coach whether you like it or not! Thanks!

Hahaha I love it! I'm really glad this is helping you get on track. That's been the objective for myself and if I can help people along the way then I am a very happy human! Cheers @carolynstahl :)

This is really interesting! This is definitely something I experience and have never thought about it in this way. Super helpful!!!

so glad it is helpful @jswag! thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it!

Wow! That was an interesting read. This is totally relatable to how the positive affirmations work in improving your life. Keep writing such interesting and quality content. I'm hooked! ;)

Ah! I so appreciate that @wandereronwheels. It's comments like these that make me want to create more! Thanks so much for reading and stopping by friend :)

Haha! I'm glad it does! :D

Indeed - we get more of what we focus on... whether it's negative or positive.

You got it @zero21mill. Thanks for stopping by :)

Another crackin' post that raises the bar for the rest of us :) I love the way you couch LOA in a less woowoo way which is more easily accessible to the more pragmatic souls amongst us. Abraham Hicks is on point but rather verbose and I feel that smoke and mirrors are employed to make something quite simple more complex - my spirit guides confirmed as much and caution me to keep things simple. As I see it your analogy is tiptop. Everything is energy and by striving for a high energetic frequency we attract the better things in life. (Shame I forgot that this morning but hey I am only human eh ;)) With love xox

Thank you @idacey-laforge! Yes, I'm very practical in my approach, and yes I would agree that Abraham does feel a little smoky at times. I think a big part of that comes from the fact that these teachings are coming from a non-human source, thus it is sometimes hard to relate. It's my intention to really ground things out and provide ideas that you can implement now...and you/your guides are so right - it's all about simplicity!

Very interesting!
It happens to me as well. All of a sudden I see things that I'm thinking. This is not something that is imaginary. This is the reality. When you focus on something, you will find more things about it. Maybe you have no idea what to do or how to get there, but you have a burning desire. You will get help you need to go there. Focus is everything, if you're distracted, you cannot get there where you want to be.

Thank you very much @axios for sharing this. Looking forward to reading your next post.

Exactly. Focus is everything. It's so subtle too, but it's wildly effective when harnessed consciously. Great words here @rezoanulvibes!

An excellent post, thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I even think that I found this post because I am doing what you describe. Absolutely brilliant!

Upvoted and most definitely followed :D

Have a great day, you know you will :D

You probably did @handsolo! Awesome to hear that you are on this journey as well. It's been quite a ride! And yes, have the great day that you know you will too ;-)

@clixmoney that is so kind of you. Really appreciate this awesome comment. Cheers friend!

you are very welcome. ☺

didknow thanks for the info

Hi! You asked me to check your post, so here I am. :-). I see you really put a lot of effort in your post. The first thing I see is the title is very long. Maybe a tip to make it shorter. Another thing is, I am a member of the @sndbox community. I can nominate you if you want? the rules are: You have to write minimum 300 words ( this is really for you!), use at least 3 images, original content, post max 1 a day and you an upvote from @sndbox for 25% for every post. BUT you have to pay a monthly fee of 60 SBD at the end of the month. Tell me, if you are interested. If so, I can nominate you to @sndbox. They will check all your posts and you have to fill I a form, where you have to write why you should be a member of the community.

@fathin-shihab, first off thank you so much for the title recommendation and kind words. I'm definitely intrigued with the @sndbox idea. Has it been worth it for you? If so, I will take your advice and go for it. 60 SBD is worth it if it's a quality incubator. I really appreciate the helping hand here!

Hi @axios! It is hard work, but it is worth it so far for me. I will ask about nominating you, next week on Monday, ok?

The brain is a great power house which which collect numerous data from the eyes within second. There is more to explore about the mind.keep giving us more ...looking at your work you are not far from becoming a whale..

yes exactly! our eyes are so powerful. the window to the soul! I appreciate you @odsam2. cheers friend!

Your article is very truthful. You originally presented the information already known to me about the so-called law of attraction. The documentary film secret of the year 2006 is described in detail by him. You are a very talented psychologist and motivator. Continue also, and you will be all right. Good luck to you and good.

Yes exactly. Same ideas being presented here in different ways. I love finding new ways to share the same principles...cuz principles last ;-) Thank you for the kind words here @cranium!

Wow this is amazing. Hey I have a question, since I'm newbie in steemit. Can we use the random picture from google when we post something?
and is it okay if we upvote our own post/blog?
thank you

Thank you @teukudianaulia. You can use whatever you want, however, you could get caught for copyright infringement. This is super rare with small pages, however, if you start reaching a lot of people it can become an issue. I suggest looking into unsplash.com or do a quick google search (no pun intended) for "best sites for free stock photos". There you will find all you need. Hope that helps!

thank you, that'll help @axios

no prob!

You can use any picture from Google, but you have to mention the links of the images in your post. Like: Source Images:1, 2 etc.

thanks for the information @fathin-shihab

Awesome post, @axios. As if you wrote this blog for me today! And what your experienced has happened to me either unintentionally or otherwise.

You are absolutely correct about focusing on something will make us see "search results" we are looking for.

I am into photography at present and I am at the learning phase. @juliank and @photocontests enumerated categories we can focus on a daily basis and take photos based on those categories.

I would focus, for example, on colourful categories and find myself seeing colourful things. I would notice things I never cared for before.

I definitely agree with you that it's entirely up to us how we live our life by simply focusing on the things that matter or important to us. Anything else becomes noise until our focused is shifted to something else.

Thank you for sharing and I learned a lot from you today. Upvoted and followed. I'd like to read more of your posts in the future. Checking also some of your previous posts coz they sound interesting.

Have a great day!

Resteemed it, as well. 😎

Thank you so much!

I love what you shared here @cjclaro. I'm a big fan of photography as well because it gets me into a different state of consciousness. Like I suddenly become aware of a different world. For me, I love taking photos of nature, especially when you really see the details in nature. It reminds me that there's so much more that I'm not looking at. When I focus in on it I get a completely different feel for what life really is.

I'm so glad you learned a lot from this article and really appreciate the kind words here. Cheers friend!

Wow, you blew my mind. What a great post. I will have to keep this in mind when negativity starts rearing it's ugly head. I will check out your other posts.

Ah so glad this helped you. It's why I write! Really appreciate what you shared here. Cheers!

great, thank you for this post.

Thank you!

This is what iv'e been searching for. I had a little different view on it, but this shapes my view even better! Good job with the post!

So happy to hear that @jeyfour. I'm really glad it helped shape your view in new ways! Cheers friend :)

synapsis.... nice blog! i follow you!

Thank you friend! I appreciate you!

This reminds me of the difference between trying to "win" or "succeed" vs. trying not to "lose" or trying "not to fail". It's a subtle shift in perspective, but it matters. When I am trying to avoid losing or failing, I am operating based on fear. When I am trying to win or succeed, I am operating more on hope and optimism.

While the world isn't easy enough to divide into "winning" or "losing", it is helpful to stop and realize when we are trying to avoid something we don't want, rather than approach something that we do want.

Thanks for sharing your article.

Yes! It's like being proactive vs reactive. One is a choice, the other is not. I'd much rather have the choice! Thanks for reading and the kind words, friend.

Great article. And I believe very true. Sometimes we attract what we're trying to get away from by (unknowingly sometimes) thinking (visualizing) about what we don't want. I am a hypnotherapist, and one of the first things we learned (and I think one of the most important things) was to use positive suggestions rather than negative. Now this can be very hard to do sometimes, because we live in a negative world at times (that's why I loved Steemfest...all positive vibes), but it's a very important factor to get results. I will even take it one step further. If someone wants something in their life to change, but it is too desperate (as in a desperate need instead of something that would be great but not needed right now) and the focus is on that subject constantly, it will be harder to get what they want. So instead, we need to visualize, and then let it go and let the universe take care of the rest. Even try to forget about it....When I was still studying hypnosis, I had to do a thesis on a subject that was close to the heart and asked hypnotherapists on an online forum for help in the matter. I asked them if they had experience with the subject. I went into it very lightly and didn't 'demand' a reply. What I got in return, was something entirely different than what I asked, but exactly what I needed and I've been practicing this ever since. I received two replies: one asked for more info and when I gave it to him, I never heard back from him. The other gave me a small sentence. The relationship with this man developed into a great friendship and later involved another person with whom we're both friends now. The sentence he gave me was: Find and read Zero Limits by Joe Vitale. I did, and have used it since, with amazing results...It's incredible to see how something like the question I asked, turned into something so much better, just because I didn't expect or demanded anything, but kept an open mind to anything. Oh, following, upvoted and resteemed.

Wow I love this @misslasvegas. Your story is so awesome and so true! There is an art to asking...I think it involves a lot of patience and a lot of detachment from any particular outcomes.

I've also practiced hypnotherapy and yes, positive suggestions are so necessary. Especially when you're providing a framework of suggestions for the mind to "play within". If that framework is negative, then you're not doing any service to provide a space to thrive. That's my opinion at least.

Really appreciate your words here and glad we crossed paths. Followed you!

You're welcome. And likewise, I'm also glad we crossed paths. But that's how it works isn't it? If the mind is open, you attract more of like-minded people, if it's closed and the 'want' or 'ask' is forced, the attraction is also closed and forced. In my first few times of practicing hypnotherapy, I found it very hard to use positive suggestions and always found myself throwing in a no, or don't or won't....I usually corrected this quickly, as I was very aware of it, but it made me realize that we live in a very negative world sometimes where the no's, don't and won't are more present than the YES, the can's and will's. Since then, I feel it is my duty to teach others the power of yes to break free from limitations put on ourselves. And even that is hard at times, because all over our life paths we come across nay sayers and people who lost touch with their true selves. But nevertheless, I will keep doing what I do and won't let them beat me down. It is very nice to meet you and I'm looking forward to reading more of your work.

Yes! (literally lol) I love your words here. It's true, taking conscious control of our focus in a world that does not reflect back a similar focus can be difficult. It's through our consistency and practice to maintain our own focus, that we begin to alter the world around us. In my opinion, the strongest focus is the most flexible one. If you truly believe that this world is "heaven on earth" then you will be flexible enough to walk into any environment (even a war zone) and not only discover the heaven that exists, but also speak it in a way where others begin to also realize it for themselves. This then turns into a "morphogenic field" and by that I mean, when people are around you they then "feel" heaven-like. This then experienced in a collective sense would mean we literally would be living on earth "as it is in heaven".

I'm not religious per say, that example just came to me sporadically ;-)

By the way, have you tried theater improv at all? The most basic teaching of any improv class you will go to is "yes and". Meaning, when you are in a scene with someone, you should say "yes" (agree) with what was just said, and then "and" (add) to include new information and expand the reality. When we begin to say "yes" to the things in our life that feel good and then "and" those aspects, we begin the process of conscious creation!

Very interesting. Love it!

Wow, one of the best reads I've had today..

"Instead of focusing on what you're trying to get away from.... focus on where you want to go.

So often we focus on what is wrong, what we don't know, or where we don't want to go."
This is so true. Or we just don't focus at all. A wise man once told me to place intent into all my actions. It was life changing advice once I started practicing what he preached.

The part about computer software and the human mind also really stood out. Never really thought about that before. Great insight.

Consider yourself followed! I look forward to reading more from you.. Feel free to check out my blog as well :-) I'm new to Steemit, so there's only a couple of publications there, but hopefully it would be worth a peek. Have a nice day!

@partywalrus I just read your introduceyourself post and feel we have a lot in common. Really looking forward to connecting more in this new blockchain paradigm! Thank you so much for the kind words and inspiration!

Interesting. You sure gotta be positive if you want to achieve something.

True that brother!

Thanks for this gorgeous post! I agree with every word! I myself practice this approach ( although sometimes in my head confusion and focus again on the negative, but always trying to get me back to positive again ;) )! I use visualization,"dreams before sleeping", ...It works amazing! I'm glad I found a kindred spirit here! I really like this post and your approach to life ! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

@happyolly totally hear you on the confusion aspects lol I feel like i'm confused a lot but in my opinion that means I'm growing and as long as I can refocus on what's good and not get locked into a downward spiral, then all is well. So glad you enjoyed the article and yes - so glad to find another like-hearted soul on here :)

^-^ I like your article, articles like this one! Always great to learn something new! I like to learn about the power of consciousness, about how we can change our reality consciously! How can we live better. How can we grow and develop our minds ...

Awesome! Me too :) it's exciting to think about who we can become. The options are much more diverse than we may first expect...and they only continue to diversify the more I experience life.

I take this wonderful article only one tiny step further . There is just one more thing to say because You said it all .....

We ARE the ones who create our own reality!
It’s that simple.

YES! If I had to sum it all up, that's absolutely what it would be. Thanks for simplifying things @mammasitta!

Thank you for this Post was thinking about this a lot lately so it just showas - change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change

That's one of my favorite quotes. You got it ;-)

smart blog congrast, follow you and resteem

dude that's a great post! a lot of valuable info! I just recently posted how to be great at anything you want to or love to do!
https://steemit.com/practice/@paulspujats/how-to-practice-anything

Love the article! Very engaging and entertaining read! Thank you!

Yes, good post about how we create our own reality. But this knowledge can also turn into pressure to try to create the perfect life instead of accepting what is. the balance is important I think..

New post, very nice

Great analogy, when I was a kid and I was praying I thought how could God reply to everyone praying at the same time, I thought that maybe there was a queue of about 10 people at a time or so. But now years later I understand our reality more in terms of a simulated reality and computing power, so now I imagine God (Life force, the Universe, The big system, etc) like a search engine as you mention, where billions of people can make their requests at the same time and they get an immediate response, even if it's not obvious at that moment, then with time we realize that the results are manifestations on what we put our attention to, our focus.

Wow! A very interesting read - I also find it fascinating that coders are essentially trying to replicate the human brain.

I read somewhere once (a while ago, so it's likely much more now) that Google (in its entirety) is comprised of something like 2 billion lines of code - imagine just how many lines of code would be required to rewrite the human brain in its entirety!!

@axios An incredible example of this just happend to me. You wrote a comment on my post and I entered to your post and read it. I just wanted to read some other post, scrolled and went to look for some juice. I returned, looked back at my phone and there, right in front of me, there was this post. :)
