AFRICAN PROVERB: No one drinks medicine on behalf of a sick person.
MEANING/EXPLANATION
No one drinks medicine on behalf of a sick person, however much one may love that sick person. The reason is that, doing so does not help the sick person in any one. In the same way, there are some things that even when we do for those we love, we are not helping them at all. If you always support your friend who spends carelessly, you are helping that friend to be irresponsible. You may think you are showing love to them by always giving them, but actually you are proving that you don't love them. Love wants the best for people. It does not condone irresponsibility.
There are two sides of true love. There is the 'tough' side and the 'soft' side. I think quite often people lean towards the extreme ends of these. They are either to soft or too tough in their love. But real love is keeping a balance of two. That said, it must be added that there is 'help' that is not helpful. Sometimes the best help to offer people, is to allow them to help themselves.
