My Promo-Mentors Writing Challenge: Hope in the mountains

It was our 11th year of giving the gift of education to children and the 3rd year of adopting Banawen Primary School in Banawen Zambales in the Philippines. This was June 18, 2017.

Out of all the communities that we helped Banawen was the one that most needed it. It was not a difficult choice to decide that it be a permanent school that we would adopt and create continuity. That we would create hope.

The Path

This was the first time that we would be using the mountain path instead of the usually dry river bed. It had been raining for the past 3 days and it would be dangerous to use that path. Little did we know that the mountain path was packed with peril.

We were lucky that this year we had more male volunteers. We usually had about 3-5 guys each year but a lot of the regular members were able to bring their husbands, boyfriends, and suitors. Talk about using the charms for more muscle power haha.

Armed with axes, chainsaws and a whole lot of grit we proceeded to chop away the fallen trees and remove the debris. The final obstacle was the huge tree hanging midway. Using our weight we managed to dislodged it and roll it off the side. Save for a few hands that got some minor cuts and splinters no other injuries or accidents happened.

Everyone was tired, injured, thirsty and in a foul mood. Sitting in a truck loaded with school supplies, food and, medicine was not the most comfortable way to travel. Legs cramping in what a usual 2-hour journey it almost doubled because of all the trees. I experienced multiple times getting hit in the face and back by tree branches. We were covered with scratches and bug bites.

People were grumbling and saying this was the last year that they would be joining. Frankly, I had the same sentiment. Bruised, battered, dehydrated and itchy was not the best feeling in the world.

The Unpacking

We arrived at the foot of the hill and here we have more lifting to do. I wanted to shirk away and use my back as an excuse but things get done faster when everyone pitches in.

The Climb

All the boxes and food stuff are being carried by the members. We are not a big organization that can pay people to run errands for us. We have volunteers that painstakingly do the work without expecting any reward. Each one helps out to the best of their abilities.

We are a boots on the ground type of organization that is physically and emotionally there in the communities. We establish ties and continuety. Each step is hard, the path rocky and slippery but we persevere.

The Most Memorable Instance

After all the grumbling, swearing and sullen mood of the group. We finally reached the settlement. This place high in the mountains, surrounded by arid and untillable soil and dense forest. We met our adopted Aeta community. When you see the children smile. It just melts away all the pain, the doubts if we would be back and the pessimistic view of why we are subjecting ourselves to this.

Everything else seems trivial as you see their happy faces. We have been for the past three years. They have come to know that we bring hope When they open their bags and see their school supplies their faces just light up. When you see them holding that pencil in their tiny hand. Hands that signify changing their lives to be better.

Yet that was not it yet. The school had a bigger surprise for us. Due to the support that was given by Gift in Kind PH for the past 3 years they have for the first time six children graduated grade school and had gone to enroll in high school that year.

These six lovely children are embarking towards the journey not just to make their lives better but to be an example to others that it is possible. A lot of these kids are unsure of themselves and what they could do. Unlike a lot of people, they lack the self-esteem to be more because it has been ingrained in them that they are expected to live their life a certain way and they have always expected to be looked down on by other people.

I admit I cried here because the feeling is so overwhelming to see them attempt to change their destiny. Six kids doing their best To fight prejudice and ostracization. To study and improve their standing.

How could anyone not cry at such an inspiring scene! They did not even ask for anything because they want the focus to be on the kids. We have been giving them monthly help in terms of food and expenses. They have only asked for a budget of P2,000 or $40 a month for six kids and 1 adult that stays with them. We want to give more but we have to understand that not everyone can give on a monthly basis.

Seeing those six kids graduate and try their best is the most memorable moment we had in supporting Banawen Primary school. It is something that we will always cherish and remember whenever things get tough.

Thank you and your team for bringing the gift for banwen primary school. It was very difficult but you did it. I can see a hope is alive there really.

Thank you for the kind words and indeed we would like to keep hope alive and well in that place.

Thanks for that!

They say that positive think + positive actions equals success. I bet you just did. Really great job boss @maverickinvictus, hope to join you some time.

Thanks man. We do it annually on the 1stweek of classes on June.
You should definitely come!

I guess I should save up then

What a wonderful story of people helping each other in trying times. Good on you for your voluntary work and helping with the school. Man, I think if I climbed a mountain in the tropical heat, even without a bunch of supplies I would be in trouble. Irish ancestory means I took 2 months to acclimatized to the heat when I was in Thailand then I had 2 weeks after I had acclimatized before I had to fly home ;-)

I would love to visit Philippines one day, for the culture and diving the reefs. I studied eskrima for a year once here in the UK. I wasn't very good and would soon get my knuckles smashed if I tried any of that over in Philippines, ha ha. Thanks for sharing your experiences maverick, it was great to see everyone pulling together in your group

There are a lot of great diving spots down South maybe @andywong31 can introduce you to Grump Whalebot hahaha

Wow! interesting that you tried eskrima that is a very lethal martial art and I tried it for a month and gave it up haha.

Yeah sitting in the back of a truck in the sweltering heat is hard. Really makes you question your commitment to the cause but when you see the kids, you know why.

Great job you guys did out there Mav! Yeah speaking of whales, we have whalesharks here in Oslob.. you guys might wanna come and visit our place Mav and Raj! 😀

Sure and I'll bring the Ohana girls to entertain you hahha

You know i can never say no to that! Haha 😀

Salute to that @maverickinvictus. Doing stuff like that is not easy yet it brings an overwhelming joy!

Yes so i await for project smile as well man!

That was so heartwarming, all of you are heroes for doing that to those childrens. I hope you will be able to it again next time and with more hands to help. Continue to give help and love to other people. This is a really great story

Hey thanks! We have been doing it for 11 years and plan to continue doing so as long as we can.

You're welcome. All i can say is WOW, that will be an amazing. Goodluck I wish you all the best. Those who will receive help from you and your team will be very lucky. Continue to help more and more people. I salute all of you.

It's really inspiring sir @mavericinvictus with this project of yours. I hope many will support more and share their helping hand.

Thank you I hope so too for the children.

Hello sir @maverickinvictus! I just wanna know some update about the tshirt contest?

Yeah sorry about that but have followed up with the board a number of times but have not recieved feedback yet.

No worries sir. I understand :)

God bless y'all, for giving hope to the hopeless and making them have reasons to smile everywhere. I would love to volunteer but i'm so far away. Stay blessed y'all and keep up the good work.

There are tons of things to do aside from being there physically :) You could do something similar to a nearby community.

What I like about Steemit is it can empower us to be the change.

Of course, i'm working on that already...
steemit has done me well, the least i cam do is spread the love

What you do helping those kids is amazing dude.

I really wish the best to any initiative of this kind. Doing activities like what you are showing here is the way we improve our communities, little by little. I bet those kids will never forget the help they received and one day they will pay it forward. :)

Hey man appreciate you dropping by. I would never forget those 6 kids and how they are trying there best to improve their lives even if they are bullied and judge on how they look.

It is my wish that I could turn over @giftinkindph to one of these kids and they continue writing about their culture.

Wow.. You really are amazing sir @maverickinvictus.. Hooray for that good deeds of you and your team... Galatians6:9 So let us not give up in doing what is fine, for in due time we will reap if we do not tire out..
I'm sure those kids will never forget your kindness..

We are really not doing it for fame or recognition but rather to help out our fellow men.

I admire what you've done and what you continue to do. You are truly an inspiration.

Thank you and indeed it is fulfilling what we do for them
