Announcing Project Newbie: Welcoming new users on their introduction posts

Coming back to Steemit and noticing the initiative users are taking to make this a better place with @steemcleaners, @curie and @robinhoodwhale feels great. One thing that would also be great to have is a group of people who focus on the new introduction posts from legit new users. Many of these already ongoing projects disqualify introduction posts.

I remember in the beginning I was browsing the new section and many intro posts were popular back then, but because of the attention they were getting through votes it brought up a lot of fake posts and accounts just for the profit, with time Steemit started to turn away from the introduction posts and focusing more on the content users were creating. I am not saying that's a bad thing, but since new users is what will make this platform thrive, I don't want them to get totally hidden and not receive much attention just because its an introduction post and/or said user isn't famous or already known on other platforms.

I myself haven't used the referral link when getting new users to the platform, so I can't exactly prove how much I have done for the platform so far or how many users I have brought in. My post count is pretty high though, and considering most are comments and directed to new users, maybe that can talk a bit for itself. To be honest I haven't even made an intro post myself, and I am not saying that every new user has to introduce themselves or verify their account. Those that do though, would be amazing to get them some attention and value to their post, respectively to the content in it.

With this initiative many will obviously try and fake posts and accounts, but with the help of other users who will step up and join this project, we will be able to tell fakes from real. So it won't get too much abused, the vote value of these posts coming from this project will be limited and let the rest of Steemit choose themselves how valued they think the intro post should be. This project will help the new users get their first boost on their posts, and give them a chance to get followers with the visibility and attention their post gets after the Newbie Squad has voted it up. While at the same time removing questions like "are Steem Dollars and Steem real" from new users cause of the reward they get from their intro post, and get them motivated to activate themselves more and provide content in the future.

Guidelines

  1. Post has to be within 30 minutes and 20 hours (reason of the 20 h max limit is so that we have time to evaluate the legitimacy of the post and account, and that there is time left for curators outside the group to vote on it)

  2. Post has to be the first introduction post of an account (if they have made their intro post a long time ago and want to update it with a new and improved one, these can qualify too depending on their first posts reward)

  3. The intro posts won't be divided into different tiers, curators of the project will decide themselves the % of vote they want to give to certain posts, with an increasing amount of new users daily the % may be lowered so our curators don't have to spend too much of their voting power on them. Remembering that the vote and attention is of more value than the reward the post makes.

  4. Creating a new account focused on this and having the curators follow its votes and other votes from the curation team, a comment placed from said account could at the same time verify the legitimacy of the user for future references. It will also save time for the other projects who won't have to verify the accounts in order to assign them to @robinhoodwhale or @curie. This could all be made a lot easier with a "verified" button on users pages, but until/if Steemit implements that, this would be very helpful until that time.

A google docs with all users and their posts that the project has curated will be made public.

I created a channel called #projectnewbie on steem.chat for curators who want to help out with this project. (No finder fees available yet but I'm sure some users will step up and help out with that too to get an incentive to look out for new legit users) Will also be inviting users to it that I know have wanted a project like this come to live and be more welcoming to the new users joining Steemit every day. Let me know in the comments down below if you have anything to add to either the guidelines or other thoughts you may have about the project or how to improve it.

Thanks for reading!

My own preference in seeing these intro posts is that they've already posted something or have at least commented. Too often in the past someone would come around, post an introduction, and that was it, not even one comment.

Unless someone's first post is an intro AND they make it really interesting and share their interests along with some convincing evidence they're a real person (and a verification image of someone holding a sign saying Steemit isn't convincing to me), I'd hold off on voting this kind of post.

That said, warm welcome comments from multiple people would be worth far more to Steemit as a whole than upvoting their posts.

Thanks for your comment, however not everyone gets things write the first time and there is a learning curve to steemit for some honest users, please support here if possible it would be much appreciated as it is for steemit awareness in my city :-)

As a Steemit newbie, I am experiencing this myself - I am learning Steemit etiquette as-I-go. Kind and helpful comments from the Community has made the learning process easier so far. I would imagine that most spam accounts wouldn't bother with image verification, and perhaps the community will flag those who re-post other's verification images? Thanks for the #projectnewbie effort!

I wrote this especially to c/p in al lnewbs posts. If I can help out, let me know!

thanks for your effort to increase quality on steemit :)
I'll watch your project

Feel free to join the #projectnewbie channel on steem.chat everyone! :)

here's a truly newbie question - how do I join/follow #projectnewbie ??
when I click on the hashtag I don't see a 'Follow' option?

Very good idea ( Newbi opinion )

Great idea, this place is rubbish for newbies in some ways!!

This looks like a friendly initiative. I'll be glad to support it. Great work!

I think this might be a good idea.

Steem has fantastic potential to really change the whole game of being a human being. Upvoted and commented to register my approval of this message :)

Thanks for dropping by! :)

Hello, I'm new to this community and I have many questions but for now one answer would be enough. Is there a tutorial for the steemit-platform which helps me to get used to faster???

I quickly googled Steemit tutorial and found this by user @beanz:

I would also recommend the guides of user @teamsteem
https://steemit.com/steemit/@teamsteem/the-ultimate-guide-to-steemit

@acidyo, Thank you very much for your support! I appreciate the feedback and have now followed you. Thanks for this post as it has pointed out my rookie mistakes and has added value to my marketing and steemit awareness strategy. Currently I man man alone trying to pave the way for my community and funding is becoming a priority as I have already put in more than what I have gotten out, however I believe with a little commitment from my side I will hopefully start to see results soon.

Many people don't realize that 99% of people in South Africa are still currently unaware about crypto currency and need to be educated on the subject as well, so you can imagine my task at hand is not only steemit related but revolves around educating people about crypto currency in general as well.

Thanks for taking the time to improve the Steemit Community.

Thanks! @acidyo Im a new user in steemit and it was very usefull. :)

Great initiative! This will help to make one good first impression. Please check our project too! We want to manipulate the STEEM price using the power of Steemit users #thegreencandle

Большое спасибо! Присоединяюсь!

What happens if we are introducing ourselves in different languages?
Just Wondering?????

Allowed as long as the user is legit.

This is an amazing idea! It would really help new people get recognized. I have a question. How do people submit their posts to get the warm welcome?

They themselves or others link their intro post either on steem.chat #projectnewbie channel or on posts created by the @projectnewbie account.

I was wondering how this would work on Steemit and it seems that as with everything else here it's all community based. created an account but then didn't post, preferring to just read others posts and see what was going on.
A few days later I felt that it was creepy to just do that so I wrote and Intro AND an interesting little blurb for a story I may or may not write.
It barely registered with the Steemit community !!!! I've had pretty much zero feedback (4 likes ... bots?) or comments.

Still ... It's interesting to read about the denizens of the Steemian Empire ... not sure I'll apply for permanent residence yet though !! ;-) Keep Steeming !! Oh, and if I try and upvote someone I'm told i need to get more Steem power ...

This is so cool! I love the many different opinions on how this should be done in the comments sections

Thanks for creating this

Hello, I was told I was nominated for @projectnewbie. Do I have to do anything or do I wait to hear back somehow? Thanks for your time~@allgoodthings

With all due respect, I would have to disagree with this policy.

  1. When you the first comer to Steemit you don’t even know of any policies of introducing yourself. I know I didn’t. Eventually, I made an introductory post and this was far later than in 20 hours. In that post, I didn’t stand with the poster next to my mugshot but tried to present myself as a person, as an intellectual and present my approach to writing.

  2. I actually don’t care how you look like (in the best sense of this word, of course. It is not my business) Not that I am ashamed of my appearance, but I don’t feel it is relevant. He is a writing community and I’d like to be evaluated on my thoughts, my writing style, and depth of my philosophical approach, not on my appearance. A hot chick with big boobs and tight ass, flashing her selfie would command more attention than William Shakespeare, who was bold and had eyes of a sad cow. You want to earn points with selfies, go to “Plenty of fish” or any other dating site. Not that we should forbid selfies, but certainly we shouldn’t give them brownie points for that.

  3. In order to identify fake accounts and bot posts, we should just read attentively rather than running down the lines as if it is an elevator. More so, I don’t see why a fake account owner cannot present a photograph of someone else with the Steemit label.

Just my modest opinion

This is all true and something I agree with. I hope you understand the whole projects is specific for users who do join the platform and want to introduce themselves. Those who do that, and at the same time verify (or at a later stage verify) the integrity of the account by any form that's somewhat easy to understand it is not someone pretending to be someone else, and once they do that they get a nomination from our account and a few votes to give their post some visibility to hopefully reach users with similar interests/hobbies/content and become familiar with the platform easier.

So just to clarify, this is only an incentive to help a portion of the new users who don't mind verifying their account, by no means does it mean anyone has to do so, or give any personal information away by verifying either. The project isn't that big and the rewards aren't that astounding for users to try and fake intro posts lately, but steemcleaners notices fake ones on a daily basis. The goal of this project is to filter out the real ones from the fake ones as well so the real ones have a higher chance at gaining views from curators and readers, and if the time at some point would come where the platform finds the need to place a verified sticker or logo on users accounts (like most platforms do lately) then that whole process wouldn't be needed to be re-done, and most of the ones that have been nominated by the project will be easier to access.

This has been the goal of the project since the beginning and with an increasing voting trail after my username I will be able to help it out more over time and thus award newcomers with higher chances at connecting with the community on their first post before they start creating content.

Just for curiosity... Do you think that the intro like mine does require a proof of authenticity? i.e. the mugshot, etc? In other words, is it easily distinguishable from the one that a bot could produce?
https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@mgaft1/neither-left-nor-write-breainer

Sure. I read your article. By trying to protect the system from bots you favor some people over other people. The measure of stoppage that you propose is very easily circumvented by imposters. However, I am not about to argue with you on your methods. You are an intelligent person and I think you will make your own conclusions from our discussion.
One more observation I wanted to bring to your attention here. I read somewhere that the system here favors the people who vote on the new entries that they think are going to eventually gain many votes. Now let me bring you the following example.
I am not sure if you ever watched on Youtube a BBC series called “The Medici - Godfathers of the Renaissance.” This is an excellent historically valid and culturally rich documentary, which took many efforts and money to produce.

Right now on Youtube it has 344,662 views.
However, I remember another video called “Girls go wild” where two silly teenage girls are jumping in the bed that had over 2 million views. So if I were to see these two newly released posts I would have favored “Girls go wild” over “The Medici” post and the current system would have praised my efforts. Yet, I think the cultural value of these posts is vastly different. If I were you I would favor a better video over more popular, simply because most popular videos are usually indulged poor taste.

Alright, thanks for wasting my time and telling me what I should favor over others.

If you are saying that I am favoring some people over others because they verify their integrity of the account, than yes. With my limited time and projectnewbies limited contributions (which are increasing a lot lately and a post will be made shortly with more information) we have only focused on the verified posts, but ever since the start of the project we have mentioned the ones who aren't verified and introduce themselves, that we will over time try and let them know about the opportunity of projectnewbie and if they in some way can verify their existence from another social platform just so we know they aren't hear to get a quick "profit" from making up a person and post, then we will support those too.

I personally haven't had too much time on focusing on the project myself lately but am glad other users have stood up and started contributing. I like that more users are taking the initiative to create more of these curation trails and helpful projects and wouldn't mind them joining forces to make this platform even better for the new user-base. There is absolutely no competition in mind here and no special gain for those who contribute except the weekly prize pool which will consist of SD and in time SP (once its divestable it will be added to the weekly prize pool for contributers to receive if the SD amount is a lot lower than usual depending on amount of contributors)

The reason I mentioned that is in case someone from the other projects thinks that the SP that is gathered on @projectnewbie is for my own gain, as stated in the first post it will be there to accumulate and be used as voting power on the accounts the project is directed at. The posting key of the account has already been shared with other Curators and if the platform wants more trust about the account, I am willing to give away the owner key to a reputable member of the platform to change it and take care of the prize pool.

Sorry, you for your lost time. I wanted to talk to someone who's running the show at steemit, but apparently I contacted the wrong person.
