Ultimaker is considered by many the gold standard of prosumer 3d printers and Cura is an extremely popular (open source) slicer software.

I didn't actually realize Cura was open source. I did know it was free though, as I have it.
Yeah there are a couple of forks but all based off the same open source base, so Ultimaker (and Lulzbot to an extent) are essentially keeping it going and the rest of us benefit from it :)
