Consumer printers are mostly cheap to buy. The manufacturer's idea there is that you are tempted to buy a pricing competitive printer and then start pumping money when you need more ink. Why will you be forced to do that? It's simple:
A new printer costs 100$ and a cartridge 75$
Yup, that's how it goes. Not only that, but some printers have initial cartridges are not topped with ink so they will only run you through half the possible pagecount so that, you got it, you need ink sooner rather than later. (HP dollar sign eye$$).
But people are smart and they not only started refilling their own cartridges (bottled ink is cheap), but now there are all sorts of cartridge expansion kits to keep you running longer. An example is below:

So all is fine, good and dandy but what does HP do?
Oh whale, back in March they released a firmware update for a bunch of their printers:
HP Officejet Pro 8610, HP Officejet Pro 8615, HP Officejet Pro 8620, HP Officejet Pro 8625, HP Officejet Pro 8630, and HP Officejet Pro 6230 ePrinter, HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer, HP Officejet Pro 6835 e-All-in-One Printer, HP Officejet 6812 e-All-in-One Printer, HP Officejet 6815 e-All-in-One Printer
.
Aparently this firmware update had a feature that would block non-HP cartridges and show an error stating they are damaged or non-compatible due to being non-HP. They key in this change is that it came into effect on September 13th.
Here are some of the messages users are getting:
Cartridge Problem.
The following ink cartridges appears to be missing or damages.
Replace the ink cartridges to resume printing.
Cartridge Problem.
Until cartridges are replaced, make sure the printer is turned on to avoid damage to the printer.
One or more cartridges are missing or damaged.
The ink cartridge listed above is an older generation ink cartridge that does not work in your printer. It can still be used with some older printer models.
If you do not own an older printer model and your ink cartridge is a genuine HP cartridge, contract HP support for more information.
Have some fun checking out the HP forum customers storming once the new implementation came to effect: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?filter=location&q=cartridge+problem+damaged&location=forum-board%3APostPrint&sort_by=-topicPostDate&s=ec&s2=my
If you are the happy owner of one of the above printers, RIP printing :(

Robin Hood Whale (RHW) is the community's solution to an essential problem that plagues Steemit: how to get noticed and upvoted before you have a big enough following. Right now, if you are not upvoted by a “whale” account, it is very difficult to get exposure and any substantial rewards, which leads to many great authors leaving Steemit. Robin Hood wants to be the “whale” that finds and helps a diverse set of talented, yet unrecognized authors. The proposed way of doing this is to cycle between different authors, upvoting ~10-20 quality posts daily. RHW won't upvote the same authors twice in any 10-day period in an effort to support more people and discourage any kind of abuse or ulterior motives. For RHW to have any meaningful impact, it must reach whale-status of SP and/or many bot followers. Yet, this is just the tip of the iceberg for this initiative. As featured authors and posts will be publicly announced periodically, we hope to inspire a movement that will lead to authors gaining fans, following and eventually to be able to self-sustain a blog on SteemIT without the RHW help at all. In a way, RHW's ultimate goal would be to not be needed at all. But as new enthusiastic authors join, RHW will be here to find them, help them and upvote them, growing the community and the overall quality of what you can find on Steemit.
Printer ink is so cheap... almost as cheap as unicorn blood.
do you tor your way to an underground market to get it priced like uni blood? :):)
Typical HP - not a good company to deal with - products, services - racing to the bottom. Complete lack of moral fibre, authenticity or professional standards . Rant over!
They had some really solid printers under the business line like the HP 4100 or the 42xx series that simply worked and you didn't need to deal with them every step of the way. More recently or consumer wise it's rather crap, I know.
and now that CSC have bought the Enterprise Services part of Hewlett Packard, I expect the printer part of the business to be just a cheap, non-customer focussed business
After-sale Customer Support is getting really important nowadays when everyone is orienting at giving more than just hw. Steep competition to keep up to and most of those that invest in customer satisfaction are the highest rewarded.
I use jars, convenient.
exactly, but the printer also keeps pagecount and you'll need to do some sort of memory flashing if you want to use the same cartridge again and again..
This is the kind of stuff that makes me stop using a company's product
True, a company's entire product portfolio plus bash them in every discussion I have online/offline.
