I think you are right about that to an extent. Even those who seemed "wacko", I have a sneaking suspicion most of them were probably pretty normal people. With these reality shows it's not so much about picking out the weirdest people, it's about getting whoever they find to do crazy and stupid things. So much about those shows is staged, and if the people want to get paid, they have to say what they are told to say. And then there is the editing. That's where they are taken out of context. It's all about sensationalism. That's what sells.
