For what it's worth, I think that Doomsday Preppers by and large dissed the prepper movement. They seemed to go out of their way to find preppers who had more than a few screws loose. Not all of the people they profiled (some were quite rational), but overall the show was skewed toward wacko.

I think you are right about that to an extent. Even those who seemed "wacko", I have a sneaking suspicion most of them were probably pretty normal people. With these reality shows it's not so much about picking out the weirdest people, it's about getting whoever they find to do crazy and stupid things. So much about those shows is staged, and if the people want to get paid, they have to say what they are told to say. And then there is the editing. That's where they are taken out of context. It's all about sensationalism. That's what sells.
Regardless though, as much of a crazy image that was bestowed upon preppers by those reality shows, the negative publicity was better than no publicity at all. That's why I included the Google Trends search result. More people found out about survivalism and preparedness than ever would have without those shows. It's up to us as a community to set people straight and share the "real" reality when they do find us.
