For the last month or so, I have been making small batches of citronella lotion to hopefully put up for sale in my Etsy store. When I say I've been making small batches; this means size-wise amounts have been in a half-pint canning jar. The reason for all the batches (this was the fourth one) is I was looking for the right scent (not too citronella-nally, but also not to overpowering of essential oils).
I started with a basic recipe (see below) of the three oils and beeswax, then had to play with the essential oil combinations.
And I FINALLY got it the way I want it!
So now that I have the recipe the way I want it, I will be making a larger batch this weekend, pouring it into 2-ounce tins, adding a label to the tin, doing a photo shoot and getting this up for sale mid-week (fingers crossed). Plus I want to use my immersion blender on the lotion to make it more of a whipped lotion versus the harder (more dense) version I have right now. I personally like the whipped lotion, body butters, etc. For that hardness I like to reserve for lotion bars; which I am also considering making with this same recipe.
I will be keeping the first three (and this one in the canning jar) for our own use; firm believer in NOT wasting!
RECIPE
Homemade Citronella Bug Lotion
- 1/3-cup Citronella infused oil
- 1/4-cup coconut oil
- 1-ounce beeswax ~ These are the ones I use
- 1-teaspoon Tea Tree Oil
- Essential oils- 10 drops of each- Lemon Grass, Lavender and Eucalyptus
Combine first four ingredients into an 8-ounces (half pint) glass jar and place in a small pot of water. MAKE sure the water does not bubble over into the jar. Heat on stove top until ALL the beeswax is melted and all ingredients are combined together (takes about five minutes). Stir frequently with a wood Popsicle stick or shish-ka-bob stick.
Remove from heat and take out of jar- CAREFULLY as it is HOT! And let cool completely.
Use when outdoors to help repel bugs and insects.
DO NOT use on dogs or pets. ONLY for human use.
Keep away from eyes and face, and open cuts.

Can it works with insects...?? We have lots and irritate while sleeping if not using mosquito net

We used ALL the combinations and I am a mosquito's favorite brunch; it did help keep them away from me more often as I worked in the gardens this past week. Which was a GREAT relief for me.
Aww...then I think I should try this out....😉

THANK YOU @steemflow!!! And @helpiecake!
I’m very interested in trying this for hiking! I get eaten alive by all the bugs and I don’t particularly care for the smell of bug spray. This is such a cool idea!
And don't forget about all those chemicals that most, if not all, of the bug sprays have in the ingredient list. This is much better!
I've been looking at making something good for the kiss and dogs. A tea spoon of tea tree isn't too strong? And since I don't have beeswax on hand think I'd be good with just coconut oil?

Thanks for sharing @goldendawne. I will make it for my girlfriend
Thanks so much for sharing your Homemade Citronella Bug Lotion recipe. I much prefer using natural products and this sounds as though it would be very effective. Mosquitoes and midges cause a lot of problems for many people and I am one of them. Having had Lyme disease, one bite can cause symptoms to flare up.
I wish you every success with sales in your Etsy store @goldendawne (U & R )
Howdy goldendawne! This is so amazing. How are sales on Etzy going?
