Planting potatoes are also worthwhile in minimum space
You do not need a large vegetable garden for the pleasure of picking your own potatoes. The versatile tuber grows in little space if, when it is planted, the modest claims of this solanacea are taken into account.
The soil must be draining, soft and rich in nutrients to plant potatoes: draining because the potatoes do not stand stagnant water, soft because the tubers can grow and rich in nutrients because the potato is among the largest consumers. Fortunately, almost all the land can be prepared for the cultivation of potatoes.
If you want to put the potatoes home, you should soil the soil already in the fall and fertilize abundantly with compost or manure, so that the nutrients are distributed during the winter. In case of heavy soil, it is worthwhile to mix a little sand to increase drainage. In the spring, dig the soil once more and then lightly fertilize with corn flour or compost.
Plant the right potatoes for a good harvest
Those who want to plant potatoes have a wide variety of varieties. Resistant to cooking, semi-resistant or floury is a matter of taste. The important thing to have a good harvest is the vegetation period. The early varieties take from 90 to 120 days from planting to harvest, late species up to 180 days. Potatoes are sensitive to frost and form the tubers only with ground temperatures of approx. 15 ° C, for which the late varieties are suitable only for hot places, while in our latitudes the early potatoes thrive almost everywhere.
The specialized shop offers a pure variety of seed potatoes, including specialties of unusual shapes and colors, from yellow to red and purple. Unlike the supermarket's consumption potatoes, these special seed potatoes form many sprouts and thus promise a good harvest.
Plant the potatoes and treat them correctly
The already sprouted potatoes grow better and can be harvested before. Who at the beginning of March supports the seed potatoes on a little soil in a box and puts it in a bright and not too hot place, will soon see the first tender shoots emerge. After four to six weeks, when these shoots will be grown up to approx. two centimeters and the last frost has passed, it will be time to plant potatoes.
Traditionally the potatoes are planted in furrows as deep as a spade. Who does not like this look of the ground, can plant potatoes even in individual holes. Just keep a distance of approx. 30 cm one from the other and choose a sunny place and everything will work for the best.
The harvest starts in June
Potatoes can fill the gaps between the flower beds. Planted in groups they are certainly decorative with their bushy growth and delicate flowering.
The tubers are planted with the buds upwards and covered with earth. As soon as the seedlings are approx. 15 cm, cover the lower third of the earth. Piling up the earth serves to restrain height growth and stimulate tuber formation. This operation should be repeated every two weeks until flowering. Depending on the variety, you can harvest the potatoes from June to October.
