I helped a youth group each make their own kayak using CNC routed plywood with canvas stretched over and then painted with marine paint. They then did a 50 mile trip in them on a lake, 10 miles per day. Every boat made it the whole time (though some needed repairs when they'd puncture them on a stick or rock near shore) and many have lasted for a decade since then.
