The Hidden Pollution

in #pollution7 years ago

When we heard pollution we often think about plastics bag, plastics bottles and Emission of CO2 by Cars or industries, but there is another part of it that we do not actually talk about. This is what they call THE HIDDEN POLLUTION or DIGITAL POLLUTION. The Digital pollution is the pollution resulting from the use of digital technology divided in pollution from the Internet and Pollution from the component of our digital devices such as (Laptop, Smartphone, smartwatches etc.)

-Pollution from the Internet

When you type the name of an artist or a song or something else on google no one think he is doing something wrong. In fact one search on google is 5-7g of CO2 thrown into the atmosphere (as a reminder CO2 is a greenhouse effect gas, in fact it is the most prevalent of them. The problem with greenhouse effect gas such as CO2 is during the day, the sun shines through the atmosphere. Earth's surface warms up in the sunlight, at night Earth's surface cools down, releasing the heat back into the air, but the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap some of the heat to keep earth warm. This is why we got the global warming. Has we know every change as an effect an pollution especially global warming is not an exception
    • In many part of the earth, warm spring as come earlier in the year as a result some animals have to move to cooler areas, but we are particularly concerned about those who cannot spread such as many land animals and plants they will probably be extinct. In fact, 20 to 30 percent of known animals and plants spices would likely face a higher risk of extinction if the temperature rose more.
   • The average sea level rose about 17 centimeters over the 1900's and it as already contributed to coastal flooding, erosion and further warming could cause sea level rose another 18 to 59 centimeters by 2100.
   • And temperature on the artic have increased about twice as fast as the global average

One Email you sent is the same consumption as bulb lamp for an hour. A comparison about the emission of CO2 is if every day for a year you send out around 30 emails, you would produce as much CO2 as a 1000km car ride, which is less than Paris to London is. Otherwise, if you send 30 emails per day in a year you release more CO2 than if you drive from Paris to London. One of the main reason of that pollution is the cloud or data center. Data center is a facility composed of networked computers and storage that businesses or other organizations use to organize process, store and disseminate large amounts of data working 24/7. The problem with computer is that they heat up we use to see what one computer can do now what about a thousand? They need to be cool down for that they usually use electricity, a lot of electricity in fact they use 623billion kWh. If cloud computing was a country it would be the 5th largest consumer in the world when we send email, pictures and videos but also after being sent anything that have been in a cloud is still polluting. All emails in your inbox are still polluting the planet because they are still in the data center and still consuming energy unless you have delete them.

Only around 5% of the component are reuse when we know there is lead, mercury, arsenic, gold, chrome, platinum, silver in or smartphone I think we could and we should do better for the recycling instead of going and extract does same material repeatedly.
