Blow is an affirmative action hire with a double-digit IQ deficit relative to his colleagues at the Times. He knows it, he resents it, and there's not a damned thing he can do about it. He's intelligent enough to realize he's trapped in a system where he can never effectively compete, and the best way he's found to satisfy his ego is to dedicate himself to destroying that system.
