I'd say electoral college ftw then. Democracies have always fallen to authoritarian mob-rule with leaders bribing and taking advantage of ignorant people through government-provided "bread and circuses". People in cities have always been more susceptible to this, as social interaction is much more prevalent and concentrated. This leads to more group-think, which is antithetical to freedom. The founders knew this, so they gave rural areas more votes in the electoral college to restrain the factions in the population-dense cities. Also, what @adconner said.
