I love Merkel now that I know she has a science background! We NEED INTELLIGENT LEADERS!!!!!!!!! She's brilliant and I think it's terribly sad everyone focuses on her looks! Women have a terrible time! Shame on the world!

The fact that someone does or did (good) science, doesn't mean he or she is able to be a good politician too. Intelligence is a fuzzy concept; with science studies and a degree and published articles you only prove you can do that specific science (necessarily not all science), with a certain skill which, in order to be evaluated correctly, needs people competent in your research area.
I remember when I was young I laughed about all the jokes... but after months of mocking her I felt bad. A politician does not need to be pretty, they need to be honest, smart and calm, sadly most of the other German politicians are not like Merkel...
