Democracy and Economics - Does Democracy Really Exist?

in #politics7 years ago (edited)

This post contains a video that looks at the relationship between economics and democracy. The video initially looks at the Greek version of democracy or ‘demokratia’. ‘Demokratia’ is called direct democracy in today’s terminology. Modern day Switzerland is an example of a country with many elements of ‘demokratia’ such as the use of referendums but Switzerland still mostly follows the ideas of ‘representative democracy’, to be explained later in this description. Some small towns in the United States of America have systems similar to ‘demokratia’. People gather in the town halls and vote on all major issues affecting the community. Unfortunately, State and Federal Governments can still assert power of these towns. Evidence suggests that ‘demokratia’ can only be successful with small populations within a reasonably small geographical area (towns or small countries).

Democracy in today’s language is also known as ‘representative democracy’. This form of democracy is not really democracy at all. Many systems are dominated by just two major parties. A two party system can be easily manipulated for the benefit of powerful organisations and people. This strategy is called ‘controlled opposition’. I have another video that explains how controlled opposition is used. This video can be found below.

This video focuses on countries such as Australia, United States of America, and United Kingdom. These countries are dominated by just two parties. These two parties present very little significant opposition to each other. Policies emphasized in the recent Australian Federal Election are discussed. The positions of the two major parties (Labor and Liberal) are very similar on many issues. History also shows that any differences that may appear significant during the election are very often backed tracked resulting in almost no difference at all.

The video discusses a list of issues that should be discussed but are given almost no emphasis at all. These issues have been placed under the following categories:

  • Health
  • Education
  • Immigration
  • Foreign Policy
  • Social Problems
  • Political Structural Problems
  • Environmental
  • Economic

These categories are broken down into detail highlighting areas that are rarely discussed and almost never change. Such areas include animal abuse and the meat industry, treatment of our first nations people, alternative energies, vaccines, excessive surveillance, and censorship through political correctness. The correct application of economics can be used to address many of these problems and issues raised in this video. The biggest problem is that Government have no interest in solving the problems raised but would rather exploit the problems for their own advantage and for the benefit of those that appointed them.

Great post... upvoted and followed! =)

Real Democracy needs :

  • free and neutral medias,
  • incorruptible campaigns and political people (corrupted > ineligible, corrupters > jail),
  • control of the people on the electeds peoples (possibility to make referendums to destituate the ellected),
  • representative voting system (alternative vote / majoritary jugement),
  • people participation to propose / vote the laws, constitutions by referendums.

That sounds like a vast improvement over what we have now.
