I think the deal he made with the Schumer/Pelosi was a strategic political compromise. To Democrats he will appear to be extending an olive branch to work with the other side of the aisle. All he gives up is three months of debt ceiling, which would have been likely anyway. He takes the government shutdown threat or speculation off the table. And he also pulls back a little more negotiating power for the more important parts of his agenda... like tax reform or Health Care reform (albeit much later down the road).
