Canadian MP says micro aggressions 'feel like death by a thousand cuts'

in #politics7 years ago

Canada.

The more liberal, US of A.

Where healthcare won't cost you an arm and a leg (in a literal sense)

Before I get into this, I want to say, I am left leaning but I am not liberal or conservative. What I am is someone who tries to think logically on my own accord.

We all know the controversy surrounding Trump. He is unprofessional, immature, seemingly lacking in the intelligence department, and all around not suitable for his position, but what is most hated about him is his far right views. Often times we associate him with groups supporting racism, but can the left be compared too?

I am not saying that liberals hate people for their race in most cases, but that very often they share the same mindset, being 'every person who is x is a y'. This mindset hinders growth as a nation, and as a species. A Canadian MP went as far to say a white woman who jokingly said 'don't steal my wallet' because she left it unattended is now racist:

The second, the younger blonde, although not natural because she needed to get her roots done, proceeded to put her wallet on the counter by the front door. Not the counter of the little sitting area further into the washroom, but the ledge right by the front door. As she placed her wallet down and our eyes met in the reflection of the mirror, she said, “Don’t steal my wallet ok?” My smile, joy and excitement vanished. She noticed, because she quickly responded with an, “I was just joking” - with a little sprinkle of “like duh??” on the side.

This felt like death by a thousand cuts? Really? Even in the most innocent scenarios it is becoming increasingly important to walk on eggshells whenever you speak to someone who is far left leaning, just as you must with the far right. People shouldn't be afraid to engage in conversation with someone of another race for fear of being tagged as racist because of an innocent joke. Would the situation still be considered offensive if the white woman, whom the MP felt the need to childishly insult mind you, was black as well? Why must everything be related to race? Think responsibly.

I guess when you don't have to worry about medical bankruptcies and other such American tragedies, the little things start to stand out more. What I don't understand is why anybody would leave their wallet on a counter in the bathroom? Is it some kind of weird Canadian tradition?

I am really not sure why she left it there, but I think if anything it would indicate some level of trust, hey?
