Steemians need to help stop net neutrality repeal

in #politics7 years ago

Remember when Comcast said "we'd never do internet fast lanes." That has been quietly removed from their website as a net neutrality repeal gets closer and closer.

Sort:

can we build another internet guys? in 3th world countries they have this done for years ,

I think part of the goal of Net Neutrality, as it is currently written, is to pile on layers of regulations that raise the bar of entry so competition to the collusive monopoly currently running the internet backbone never arises to realistically threaten it.

I wonder what options we will have able to fight back if these internet fast lanes are created. Most people in the US only have little to no choice in their internet service provider. If every major provider adopted the fast lanes I doubt a significant portion of the population would be willing to do a straight up boycott.

Internet was perfectly fine before Net Neutrality, we don't need it.

You remember that time that telecoms like comcast and verizon throttled netflix before we got net neutrality? I remember the buffer times. Too recent for you? How about in 2005 when a north carolina telecom named Madison River was blocking vonage to force it's customers to buy their phone service instead of just internet? The FCC made them cease that activity and pay heavy fines in 2005 under Michael Powell! How quickly we take things for granted now.

They just throttled it just of the blue? There was a probably a high demand for that content, just like if there are too many vehicles on the road you are gonna get traffic stops. What NN is just gonna do is stop telecoms from enabling you to buy a "lane" for that content so you can enjoy it without throttling, they are mostly not interested in stopping you from consuming any content and having free speech on the Internet, while goverment certanly is.

Is it really protecting free speech if my home server website get's throttled to 1x cellphone data speed?

What about Blocking vonage in 2005? They certainly were found to be doing that if the FCC fined them for the behavior. You don't get fined for an accusation.

Agree. Problem, reaction, solution. Net Neutrality as it is now written is another Obama era scam. Net neutrality in some form is good. Not the current form.

What specifically is wrong with the net neutrality drafted under George W. Bush and ratified under Obama?

What specifically in Obama's net neutrality regulation is a scam? I am open to understanding more on the topic. I recently asked a friend what was wrong with the internet before Obama's regulation? They replied and told me that the internet had not been around long enough to implement these type of rules/regulation. I am generally against regulation so this entire issue confuses me a little bit. Were the cable companies (pre-Obama regulation) manipulating the internet speeds? Thanks!

Nice to see you are doing well.

Sadly there are a lot of evil people in this world that have no love for humanity. These people these people put greed above all.

It is going to happen whether someone likes it or not. The 99% always fail infront of 1% and the govt.

Thank you for this article I follow you from today I hope you will help me if you can

Whether or not one agrees or disagrees with netneutrality - lack of netneutrality will undermine the core principles of the net we know today. Hope US keeps netneutrality intact. Nothing sucks more than censorship which is ultimately the same as making a slowlane slow enough to be usable at all... @davidpakman is the reason I joined steemit.

Besides sharing and resteeming this video, what would be an effective way to help spread the news? I don't believe the mainstream public is even aware of this issue. Do we understand why this has very little coverage? One obvious reason would be because the cable companies control the majority of the news broadcasting, and want to slide this issue under the carpet. I believe net neutrality is something we can all come together on no matter what "side" we are on (i hate using the word "side"). Net Neutrality Must be kept! If anyone has any ideas please let me know before it is too late.

Monopolies on the internet will most likely hurt the steem network. Good thing there are blockchain projects going on to decentralize the internet!

The repeal of net neutrality is a real threat to anything that is done online. It could potentially impact many different online revenue streams including crypto's. I suspect there are a number of motivations pushing this repeal along. Independent media such as yourself David are competing with the corporate media and they no longer have a monopoly on information. Information has been decentralized in the same way currency is being decentralized. There are some truly disruptive things going on online that the establishment clearly sees as a threat to their hegemonic power.

Keep up the good work

The repeal of NN will hurt so many people. it will effect college kids, they can hardly afford rent, books and other things needed, this will hurt schools, as students won't be able to do their work. This will hurt self employed people. business. People seeking employment. It will hurt YouTubers and most of their views come from the US. Call your reps and ask them to vote no on this. This goes against freedom of speech, its unconstitutional.
