I release the first write up on the Judge for Yourself article which seeks to educate world readers on whether Ghana was founded or not and if it was, by who? Was it by an individual (founder)or by a group of people (founders).
In laying the foundation to take off, this write up seeks to do a bit of exposé on the semantics of the words 'found' and 'founder' as analytic philosophers use to clarify the confusion surrounding words.
In order not to confuse you, I'll take the words, 'found' and 'founder' and explain them in turns so we accomplish our aim of educating.
So first, what does it mean to found? To begin with, the word found is the past participle of the word find. However, looking in the dictionary, I realised find has quite a number of connotations that seeks to define it. For instance in the English dictionary, find means to be bring something into existence. Another definition has it that, to gain, as the object of desire or effort.
If these two definitions are anything to go by, then Ghana the then Gold Coast was not founded per the first definition as the Gold Coast pre - existed all Ghanaians or the arrival of the colonial masters who came to name it. That means it fails to help us get the real understanding of what it means to found since you cannot find something that existed before you.
The second definition also presupposes that, Ghana formerly Gold Coast was gained or won. If so, from who and by whom? Probably from the colonial masters. But whom, we shall get to know soon. However, as we all know, Ghana was not a trophy that was competed to be won such as the world's cup. That clearly means the winning of Ghana's independence or freedom to rule it's own affairs or from colonial rule.
Hence, founders day per this understanding of the latter definition means the gaining of freedom or independence from the colonial masters done by some one (founder) or some group of people (founders). Hope you are clear about this??
Now, I'll avoid much words by tracing the origin of the word 'founder' from the word 'found', and that would mean, a founder is someone who founds or founded..Lol.
Having this background knowledge, we shall proceed to now ask who founded Ghana's freedom - to wit, who won/gained independence for Ghana?
Straight away, is it Kwame Nkrumah or by some group of people as it has widely been speculated?
Digest these and stay put for the next article on judge for yourself, who founded Ghana.
Hhhmm, English nd history lessons combined. Very interesting, Ghanaians have really lost and some few have 'forged' a history for us.
What would we be celebrating on 21st? We all await to see
Waiting on this am curious
