benefits of learning to play online poker

in #poker7 years ago

There's no denying that online poker is dying, the player pools are drying up, the bot-makers are getting better and the tools for learning the game are getting more sophistocated and easier to apply to one's game. There are a lot of benefits to learning this great game and it's variants.

  1. Discipline
The only profitable way to play poker is to make decisions that you think will yield a positive value of money. Anything else is just punting money. Building a bankroll in the micros by cash games or tournaments is a very hard and stressful experience in which you will only be successful as long as you stick to make positive value decisions. The knowledge you gain by doing this is invaluable as the same grind is necessary in nearly every career, learning path or series of decisions that you pursue. Payoff in life doesn't come from one decision, it comes from a combination of decisions and playing poker will give you an edge in your decision making.

  2. Dealing with market saturation
A lot of big payoffs in life come from a persons ability to exploit something they are exceptionally skilled at compared to the rest of the cohort. In a space like online poker there are already 100's of thousands of people making a 'living' off of the game. To move up the stakes you need to become better at decision making than a majority of the players at a single. To do this requires a number of different factors to go your way, to be able to deal with the variance in poker, to stay healthy of mind and to keep your discipline. In contrast live poker is a much better game to play, the players aren't good and they don't get better like online. The players also aren't there to win money, they are there to have a gamble. For anyone wanting to come up in poker these days, I definitely recommend playing live as there is much more money there.

I think it's important for people to realise that if they want to make money they need to pursue markets that aren't very developed and create their own way of exploiting it as the people that create their own methods reap the rewards.

You guys should check out our Steemit Poker League. Follow @spl for all the info.

I used to play it a lot, with friends, and then in poker stars, I played for about 4 or 5 years, till one day I just get bored of it. Now I play once in a while, but not even close to back then when I was really into it.

I have zero discipline.. Poker is probably not for me.

all you need is passion the discipline can be learned later albeit painfully.

Really hope it can find its way back the the US!

i wonder if online play will pick up again when/if provably fair deals/games are developed using blockchain... maybe people just got too paranoid about game rigging and moved away from online play...
