RE: 30 Poetry Challenge :: Day 1:: Songs of Lemongrass and Willow

in #poetry7 years ago (edited)

Sweet ode to the sustaining, life-long ties that form between us & Nature. Here's mine, @anwenbaumeister :

When I was tired, running from myself and family harm,
you took me in your many strong arms, dear walking tree
Mapped out against sky and earth like a nervous system
you gave me roots to hold onto and swing from and belong

Stepping outside, it’s not precisely sun that I was after
or the illusion of perfect stillness, but something else
that has to do with the distant riot of children at play
stacatto squeals accompanied by the cawing of crows

Or the gentler song of slighter, winged creatures
circling above, frolicking, or pecking at your neck
while the patter of nearby water offers its liquid paean,
and winds tease younger trees till they shudder with pleasure

Not you, stoic childhood ally, you stood your ground and said:
This is the quiet pageant you longed to be part of
set aside your toy fears and try to vaguely register
yourself, easing into the pattern, your breath deepening
as your heart slows, beating in unison with all living things.
