HERE WITH HER...

Here,
Beneath her cuddle,
I lie still,
Too scared to breathe,
Lest I rumple her slumber,
Lest I make her quicken
And see me weakened,
Empty of all reserve,
Comfortable within her presence.
I hold my breath and watch her sleep.

Here,
She is a weight on my ribs,
A shape beneath the sheets.
She is the warm breath on my cheek,
Faintly scenting of toothpaste and roses.
She is a fire and a deluge on my skin.
She is as much a part of me
As I am a part of the shadow on the wall
But she can never know.
She chuckles in her sleep.

Here,
I want to hold her
But I have to let her go.
I need her to live
But you understand that I need air.
I want to listen to her song
But you know I am really deaf.
I hate to see her cry
But truly I am blind to mere tears.
I listen to her soft snore.

Here,
To her, I am a black warm rock
Standing in the sun,
Casting no shade,
Unmoved, unshaken, unbroken.
Beneath her I know that I am
A quivering mass of dread,
A trembling hand, an unravelling skein in her hand.
If she let go, I will crumble to dust.
I sigh and watch her breathe.
