If I could take my
guilt on a trip, we would

Yup. We all make mistakes, some of us bitter, terrible mistakes, but wallowing in our shame and self-loathing over the mistakes we have made does no one any good, not us, nor those we harmed with our disappointing behavoir.
Seems to me that it makes more sense to admit your fault, publicly declare it to the offended person(s), and attempt as best we are able, to make amends and move forward in a better way.
