A Fog of Wishes

Out in the mist
Through billowing smoky fumes,
Like Juliet of the Spirits,
A kaleidoscope of dreams
Of memories and visions
The unreality of fog
Works its magic
And incants another world.

This one is gentler
Softer and indistinct
Suddener than reality
And more of it, I think.
Faces and shapes emerge
Out of a milky haze,
Beautiful and frightening
In an arcane, spectral way.

In this occult ether
Time and space are neither
Certain nor in their place,
And I can retrace
My missteps of the past
And perhaps even erase
Certain painful mistakes.

A portal opens in the fog
A doorway to revisit
A long lost cause,
But something gives me pause—

Is it worth it after all
To change my Fate
For a clean slate?
And who knows
What else might change…

I might lose you in the end
When you’ve accepted
Who I am.

The mist folds in upon itself
And the portal dissolves
Into a wall of fog.

So much for a foggy vision
Ending in indecision:
Nothing can erase
What once has been,
Seeking perfection is futile…
A vainglorious dream
Of cosmic glitches

And nothing is worse
Than being lost
In a fog of wishes.

I was hooked from the first stanza - brilliant way to establish the domain of the poem. The third is also a highlight for me, the way you dance around the rhythm there with your word choice is just wonderful. Maybe its the rhyme scheme? AABBCBB - seems to work a treat, I'll have to try it sometime. Thanks for another great read.

A very insightful commentary, my friend - you know your way around a poem

But something gives me pause

That something is the vision within the fog you have masterfully captured. I was ready to journey with you to the land of Harry Potter or Narnia after reading this. :)

yes, a bit of a departure from my usual fare - but I seem prone to mind voyages lately :)

Seeking perfection is futile…
A vainglorious dream
Of cosmic glitches

And nothing is worse
Than being lost
In a fog of wishes.

We sacrifice so much to the past. Really splendid penning, John:)

thanks, Pryde
