If You're Going to Write a Poem

If you're going to write a poem,
stop hiding behind words like mine and personal.
Give it to the world, open ended-
tell them, "I made this for you,"
because you did, even if
you won't admit it.

"We do it for ourselves" - one of the greatest lies ever told to writers....

I wish I could upvote this a million times.

I love the sentiment of this. I always say, that you get from art what you bring to it. Part of that is understanding that different people bring different things to your poems. They bring their experience, their joy, their memories, their sadness, their lives, and the interpretations which they come up with are a unique manifestation of a bond between them and the author. Thanks for sharing. You've so much with so little.

This is magical, I am reminded of the saying ´Once you put words down on paper you lose the right to own them´ how I wish we poets could learn the utmost importance of our audience... #much love for the touching words:)

Beautiful and true. The life of poetry, properly understood, is one of service.

Was about to say you stole it, but you're actually Matt Voscinar haha. So much stolen stuff in the poetry part of this site :(

Anyways, I believe you're right, even though it can be very hard to share your innermost thoughts for the entire world to tear apart. I always try to think about people that might be struggling and might feel alike, might help them feel not as lonely, if even for a short while.

A good one, love when stuff makes me think, thank you. :)

Oh, man. That would’ve been an interesting back and forth 😂

Some people have a way with words, and other people ..oh ,uh, not have way.
