In that poem I sense the 500 years of painful history endured by people of African descent on all sides of the Atlantic, but also the creativity and resilience, of which stream I am both part and parcel, a descendant of Africa in North America, descendant of the strong who survived slavery, including those chains which you pictured. I feel the sadness, but am also moved to even greater resolve to bear up the great legacy of creativity and resilience.
