A Silent War

Hey princess, it’s nearly midnight.
It’s time to turn off the lights.
Come to bed, I’ll tuck you in.
Close your eyes and no peeking.
But wait, don’t forget my goodnight kiss,
‘Cause once I’m gone, it’s something I’ll miss.
You see princess, I’d be leaving soon.
The war is starting and they want me too.
I have to fight, fight for you,
For us, our family and our country too.
I would never leave if I had a choice;
To lay down with you and forever listen to your voice.
Just one more time before I go,
I thought I should let you know;
That all this time I had been afraid
But never let it show.
I’m afraid, that I might not make it back,
The courage to leave you alone is something I lack.
In the darkest of nights, tossing and turning,
Even when death seems alluring.
The letters you write bring me hope,
That even though it’s hard, I have to cope.
I keep a picture of yours in my wallet.
With you by my side, I won’t hesitate to take a bullet.
I hate the wars, they do no good,
Destroy the peace and ruin brotherhood.
They leave behind a trail of blood,
Which is eagerly followed by the world.
The battlefield, filled with the sound of gunshots
And bodies of those who bravely fought.
And after the battle has ended
After each action has been refuted and defended
Follows a heartbreaking and deafening silence;
Silence that could haunt you for long
Silence that is caused from the stillness prolonged.
