The Travails of Motherhood - A Brief Review of An Artwork I Bought Some Years Ago

Some years ago, I picnicked with some friends and family members at Eleko beach in Lagos. While I was strolling on the burning sands of the beach, a fine gentleman walked up to me. He was trading artworks and wanted some patronage.

I was not really ready to buy an artwork but his persistence overwhelmed me. So, I eventually settled for the great artwork you now see.

The artwork portrays a towering woman who has a pot balanced on her head and a baby clinging to her back. The woman, whose face cannot be seen, is going through the travails of motherhood.

Obviously, the woman has to cater for members of her family, nurture her baby, feed the ego of her husband, and sometimes put her resources to the good use of her family.

And in most cases, her husband does not appreciate her efforts. In the case of this art work, while the woman had already gone to the scream to fetch some water, the men (who are likely hunters) are just getting ready to leave their huts to hunt.

This artwork tells us the sacrifices women go through to keep their homes together, to cater for new members of the family. Unfortunately, women do not always get the recognition they deserve. At any rate, the artist has done his work - it is now left for us to do our own.
