오늘은 몬스테라에 대한 이야기를 해보려고 합니다. 근 몇 년 간 가장 인기가 많은 식물이 아닐까 해요. 몬스테라는 인테리어 용품들의 디자인으로도 많이 활용됐었죠. 

좀 더 시간을 거슬러 올라가면, 1900년대 앙리 마티스의 그림에도 종종 등장했던 식물이기도 하고요.

몬스테라 물꽂이 / Monstera water stand

당시 저는 온라인 쇼핑몰에서 몬스테라 줄기를 몇개 구했습니다. 아래 사진처럼 2-3주간 물꽂이를 하자 뿌리가 내리기 시작했습니다.  물꽂이 시에는 2-3일에 한번씩 물을 갈아주었지요. 물을 교체할 때는 수돗물을 반나절 정도 미리 받아두고 염소 성분을 날리면 좋습니다.

뿌리가 손가락 두 마디 이상 자라기 시작할즈음 몬스테라를 화분에 옮겨 심었습니다.  화분에 옮겨심을 때 주의사항이 있다면, 배수가 잘 되게 해야 한다는 점입니다. 제가 화분 몇 개를 죽여보고 알게 된 점인데요.  

초보자들이 식물을 죽이는 원인은 대부분 물부족 보다는 과습이며, 상황을 더욱 악화시키는 것은 배수가 안되게 화분을 심었기 때문이라는 점입니다.

물주기/ Warter cycle

몬스테라는 기본적으로 물을 좋아하는 식물입니다. 그러나 과습은 주의해야 합니다.

물주기 노하우는 화분의 겉흙이 바싹 말랐을 때 흠뻑 물을 주는 것입니다. 화분의 겉흙을 살짝 걷어 손가락으로 흙을 눌렀을 때 흙이 뭍지 않으면 그때가 물을 줄 때입니다.

제가 생각하기에 물주기 기준으로 알려진 일주일 혹은 한달에 한번은 단지 이 식물이 물을 얼마나 좋아하는지를 알려주시는 거 같아요. 집안 환경에 따라서 일주일에 한번 보다 주기가 짧을 수도 길 수도 있습니다.

그러니 겉흙이 마른 것을 기준으로 삼고 물주기를 하는 게 좋아요.
