[EN] : Today, @intrepidphotos from Australia and living in Canada submitting a fantastic landscape. Chemical Engineer, he defines himself as a none profesionnal photographer but for sure has the skill. Nicolas and Vincent are going to review it. But let's first discover his picture as initialy posted.

[FR] : Aujourd'hui, @intrepidphotos, photographe australien vivant au Canada qui nous soumet une photo fantastique de paysage du Grand Nord. Ingénieur chimiste, il ne se définit pas comme un professionnel et en a pourtant bien le niveau. Nicolas et Vincent vont en faire une analyse. Mais commençons par découvrir son image!

[EN] : First, I must tell you that Nicolas and I choose this picture as an example of a fantastic picture. At first sight, no drawbacks and only a good opportunity to explain why this shot works so well. While writing my review, I don't know what Nicolas is going to argue. And he does not know my review neither. So let's go!

[FR] : Tout d'abord, je dois vous faire une confidence: nous avons choisi cette photo avec Nicolas comme un exemple de photo quasi parfaite. Et à première vue, aucun défaut. En revanche, une excellente occasion d'expliquer pourquoi cette photo fonctionne aussi bien. Au moment où j'écris ma critique, j'ignore celle de Nicolas, tout autant qu'il ignore la mienne. Donc? Allons y!

[EN] : First point : the composition. Here, a perfect example of an excellent composition with a main entry, lines that conduct your eyes, elements that make you turn in the picture, and again lines to go back to the entry. As such, you don't go away. You remain watching the photo. to be honest : how long did you watch the original photo? More than a second? Yes! And that is one evidence it is a great composition. At this stage, I can hardly beleive this choice from @intrepidphotos is inconscious. I am sure he thought about it while shooting. Second thing : the square format. Excellent choice also and it gives some universality to this picture. Easy to read, easy to look at and in a word: super efficient. Congrats for this! And for beginners, always remind that your spectator have to turn in your image, and this is not due to the subject but the composition only.

[FR] : Premier point : la composition. Voici un parfait exemple d'une composition réussie avec une entrée principale, des lignes qui conduisent le regard, des éléments qui font tourner notre oeil dans l'image et de nouveau des lignes qui nous ramènent au point d'entrée. De sorte, que vous restez dans l'image. Soyons honnête et faisons un petit test : combien de temps avez-vous regardé la photo de départ? Plus d'une seconde? Et bien c'est la preuve que cette composition est excellente et fonctionne. J'ai du mal à croire que ce soit inconscient pour @intrepidphotos et je suis certain qu'il l'a vu à la prise de vue. Une image facile à lire, facile à regarder, en un mot: efficace! Bravo pour cela! Deuxième point: le choix du carré. Pour moi un excellent choix qui amène une universalité à sa photo. Sobre et efficace. Et pour les débutants, gardez toujours à l'esprit que votre spectateur doit tourner dans l'image, et le sujet importe peu, on ne parle ici que de composition.

[EN] : Second point : the colorimetry. I told you that at first sight, I perceived no drawbacks but to be honest, one thing caught my eyes quickly : not enough black in the sky. And if I look at the histogram, I am right. Just applying an automatic level reveals this lack. Is it a drawback? Well, it depends. If you only consider a screen render, it is not a problem. But if you consider a high res print, for sure a profesionnal printer will correct this, although the photo will be faded. May be, it is a choice for @intrepidphotos may be he has not seen this as he might have a non calibrated screen. Anyway, it is a minor drawback.

[FR] : Deuxième point: la colorimétrie. Je vous ai dit qu'à première vue, je n'avais perçu aucun défaut. Pourtant mon oeil a vite accroché sur un détail: il manque des noirs dans le ciel. Et si je regarde l'histogramme, cela se confirme immédiatement. En faisant juste un coup de niveaux automatiques, nous en avons la preuve. Est-ce pour autant un défaut? En fait, cela dépend. Si on envisage qu'un rendu informatique à l'écran, cela ne pose aucun problème, en revanche, si on veut en faire une impression, là un tireur professionnel va corriger le problème sinon l'image va être très fade. Alors c'est peut être un choix d' @intrepidphotos, mais peut être ne l'a t-il pas vu sur un écran non calibré. Quoi qu'il en soit, cela reste un "défaut" mineur.

[EN] : In terms of colorimetry, @intrepidphotos made a choice : only one color which is blue. No red, and no Yellow. (White and black are not colors) This gives purity to his picture and I agree with this choice, but note that the yellow layer is in the file and to prove it to you, I just revealed it (see my modification below). I did not apply any filter, just change the level. As a conclusion: editing is part of your willing and must be assumed. In this case, @intrepidphotos produced a fantastic picture and many congrats to him!

[FR] : En terme de colorimétrie, @intrepidphotos a fait un choix d'une seule couleur : le bleu. Aucun rouge, aucun jaune. (le blanc et le noir ne sont pas des couleurs!). Ce choix apporte une pureté à l'image mais pour information, la couche de jaune existe bien. Sans appliquer aucun filtre, mais juste en corrigeant le niveau, je l'ai fait réapparaitre sur la photo ci-dessous. Conclusion : le post traitement est la touche finale de votre message et il faut assumer vos choix. Dans le cas présent, @intrepidphotos a réalisé une photo fantastique et je lui transmets toutes mes félicitations!

[EN] : Hi Rob! First, all my congrats for your submission! In your introduce text, you talk about a walk, looking for something. It is interesting et and I will detail later on it. First about the composition : I really like the square format you choose as it reinforces the seen and observed elements.

[FR] : Bonjour Rob, tout d’abord je te félicite pour cette image. Dans ton texte d’introduction tu parles d’une promenade à la recherche de quelque chose. C’est intéressant et on y reviendra un peu plus tard.
Nous allons en premier lieu parler de la composition. Ce que j’apprécie dans ton image c’est le choix du carré qui renforce le triangle imposé par les éléments que l’on y voit.

[EN] : Each part of the triangle is important and capture the spectator in the image. We first see the full moon that gives a terrific ambiance to the scene. On the top, the moon illuminates all the scene. But shooting far with a wide angle, it gives some mystery to your picture. The dog, although very far is net and in opposition to the middle part where we can only distinguish things. This part brings mystery also. Up to me, you wide angle choice is the good one as it includes secondary elements as the tracks lines and stars that answered to each other.

[FR] : Chaque élément du triangle a son importance et permet d’enfermer le spectateur dans ton image. On a d’abord la pleine lune qui permet de découvrir cette scène très étrange. Elle surplombe la scène et devrait permettre de tout révéler. Mais parce que tu as choisi une distance lointaine le mystère reste entier. Ensuite le chien, statique, qui regarde vers cette forme particulière. Le chien malgré la distance est identifiable mais cette forme en partie cachée par le sable et le vent reste mystérieuse.
Pour moi tu as choisi la bonne distance car cela permet d’inclure des éléments secondaires comme les étoiles ou les traces de pas qui se répondent en haut et en bas..

[EN] : The chosen distance from the scene avoids explicit speeches. It is the major bonus from your picture. What is the dog looking at? Is he scared? Who made the tracks? As such, so many questions I have with no real answer, just my imagination to fill it. And to focus again and again to have an answer. I would love to see it printed in huge format.

[FR] : De plus cette distance permet de garder cette forme en dehors de toute identification claire. Et c’est une des très grande force de ton image. Ton image est pour moi très porteuse de sens car elle raconte une histoire inachevée. On pourrait même l’imaginer sur une autre planète. Qu’est-ce que cet animal regarde? Est-ce dangereux? Qui est passé par là et a laissé ces traces de pas? Autant de questions que ton image posent sans nous donner les réponses. Nous forçant à scruter celle-ci encore et encore. J’adorerai la voir en grand format, vraiment..
