Yes a vignette can highlight the subject matter, as well as hiding all the mistakes in the photo. So you really don't have to have a great shot to use a vignette to your advantage - just good subject matter. The rest of the photo can be pretty bad, but it won't matter if it is hidden by the vignette. :-)
